Howdy Y'all.

I currently own several Dobyns rods and need to add another tool to the box. I have the DX744 that I love for Jigs, Trigs in 1/4 - 1/2 in open water , brush and docks but as soon as I bump up to 5/8 or 3/4 and dragging it just seems a bit overpowered. Obviously easy answer would be just get the DX745. DUH. But I am wanting to try and double those jig weights with a rod that I can flip 5/8 - 3/4 weighted plastics / jigs into what I was say is light to medium grass for summer fishing.

I had the DC735 in the past and remember it being much more stout that than DX744. Wonder if the DC735 and DX745 share that same Stoutness or if they are different blanks.

I am hesitant to go to a true Dobyns "Flip" rod as I am not interested in a broomstick.

Thanks!

Ben, welcome to the Ultimate Bass family! Glad to have you with us.

I have the DC 744C and the DRX 725C for my jigging needs but not the others so I apologize that I can't help you out. We do however have a good number of Dobyns users here who can, and hopefully one of them will be along shortly to get you pointed in the right direction.

In the meantime pull up a chair, make yourself right at home and have a look around. Looking forward to seeing you out on the main boards.

The DX795 flip is going to be just what you want. The extra length gives you the tip action you are looking for on a rod that will handle those weights very easily. The 795 is a special rod.
The Dx745 is going to be very close to the DC735 with a hair more tip action and more sensitivity.

Thanks Zippy! So there is no worries of dragging football jigs on the DX795? Does the MH give it less of a broomstick feel and more versatility as a flipping / pitching stick?

I'm not interested in doubling as a frog rod at all. This is very much so a summer moderate grass (coontail / milfoil) flipping rig and a deep water football jig / worm rod for those heavier weights.

I have two of the 795's and love them. They are the perfect moderate flipping/punching rod. I hate broom sticks for punching, I think being too stiff gives the fish a chance to come unpinned. The DX 795 is strong but has a great tip.

I don't like comparing the DC 735 to the DX 745 as they are not the same rod at all. I wouldn't be afraid to do light punching with the 745 and then turn around and use it as a Trig pitching docks rod. The DC735 is very stiff. The extra inch and different action of the DX 745 puts it in a different range.

So my final thoughts. What length of rod do you want? Both the DX 795 and DX 745 will fit your needs. If I were punching and dragging mostly I'd want the longest rod possible for bait delivery and taking up line on hook set. If I were flipping to cover more, then maybe the shorter rod.

Thanks Mike. I also checked out your lengthily review of the DX795 last night too.

The length is not paramount to me at all. I love DX744 but another 5 inches wouldn't be an issue for what I'm planning on using this for. Actually would probably be beneficial as you laid out for flipping and long cast deep water jig / worm applications.

Thanks y'all!

I need to make it known that I mean Pitchin' to grass and not Flippin. I never Flip the traditional way of using a set length of line and your finger.

Mike Cork

I personally wouldn't use anything else for pitching to grass  :-*
