I've got orders out there to Edward's afb and I DON'T see any lakes... :-( :-(

Any chance I should bring my boat?! I saw a few places maybe 4 hours away but with gas over $4.50 a gallon I sure won't be driving much.

Anyhow if anyone has some ideas or reasons to bring the boat with please let me know!

So sorry bud. I had family at Edwards and visited the area for other reasons as well (SR-71). No water, desert as far as you can see. Unfortunately I'd recommend selling your rig and buying some insulated waders to take up trout fishing. It's actually a lot of fun, just way different than bass fishing.

Again, sorry to hear you got the finger in your last year ~rant ~rant

Yeah not looking so good. I've never tried fly fishing but may have to do something! Gas is up to $6 there now so wouldn't want/couldn't afford to drive 3 or 4 hours to Havasu.

Maybe take a day trip to Lake Castaic and rent a boat as it's only an hour away.

Wow that's a shame.

At least you got that DD before you have to leave. Just think how much bigger she'll be when you come back to chase her again!

We used to drive three hours from Vandenberg to fish Castaic. Back in the 80's it was the lake of all lakes. One of the first California lakes to get Florida strain largemouth and the world learned real quick how much they loved to eat stocked trout and get big and fat.

Didn't realize it was only an hour from there. They still catch giants there, were talking 15-18 pounders. Big Swimsbaits... ever hear of the Castaic Trout color :-*

I didn't see it at first due to being zoomed oit a ways and it being tucked into the mountains. Now seems like there are 2/3 lakes I could rent a boat and fish within 3 hours. Lots and lots of rules on them all too from the reading I've done. Basically I could "take" my current boat there but only use the trolling motor. Not worth hauling it 2k miles for that lol!

But yeah I've read/heard about that lake quite a bit and I'm sure I'll be on it soon after arriving!

Lake Isabella is about 100 Miles from Edwards.  It is regarded as one of the better bass fishing lakes in SoCal.  That still makes a trip expensive at $6+ a gallon.
I knew I shoulda re-tied!!

Thanks for the info Pat! I'll def fish as much as I can. Gas prices will def hamper that some though for sure. I see them have events on Lake Havasu a lot so may do those as a co.

Update-

Found a pond(3-4 acres?) on base!! Has been there since the 60s and is fed by a well. The reeds lining the shoreline look awesome!

Also there is supposed to be a 26 acre lake in a public park in Lancaster! Will def check that one out soon! Give me a reason to unpack the uhaul some lol.

Well from that sign you know that there are at least bass and catfish in there. Should feed the need for some fishing time! Glad you found something so close by.  :toot:

Those ponds are great places for a float tube or kayak.  The 'Yak scene has really exploded out West with some pretty significant tournaments.  I have seen some with way over 100 competitors.  Definitely a less expensive way to get on the water.  But as always, people find ways to spend a lot of money doing it!

I fished Isabella a couple times. Amazing fishery, not really big, but well maintained. My first tournament on the lake the winning stringer was 48 pounds and they caught them Carolina rigging crank baits of all things. The lake is so small they were seen by many competitors slinging this contraption.

I know it's out of the ordinary for C-rigs but it's not as uncommon as one might think.  Cranks, floating minnows and even walking baits and prop baits are used a lot, at least by guys here in New England.

Sounds weird but I'll have to try that stuff!

On a long clay or rocky point the small crank getting pulled down and then floating back up prob looks dang good!!
