What Does The Future Hold?

What does the future hold for anglers? That's a question I've been asking myself over the past few months, and a recent little mini feature on the subject in a magazine got me to thinking about it more seriously.

I'm going to start with 3 areas I believe will see huge advancements and probably some completely new materials or technology that we have never seen before.

1)   Rod Materials.
2)   Electronics.
3)   Outboard Motors.


Rod Materials

Personally, I think at some point we will see a new material for making rods. I'm talking a brand new, never before used or possibly even seen material, not just a variation of the graphites/carbons or fiberglasses that we have today.

Back in the day we had heavy, sometimes awkward to fish with fiberglass rods. Then, along came new rods made out of graphite that were thinner, lighter and far more sensitive. And it changed the way we fished in a huge way.

It's been many decades since that happened and I believe that we are due for something new. Maybe sometime within the next 20 – 30 years we ae going to have another revolution in rod materials.


Electronics

This one is really a no-brainer since units have been evolving so rapidly. It seems that by the time an angler finally gets ahold of the latest and greatest, and gets it installed it's already being hailed as old news and the next new, big thing is announced.

I'm thinking that image quality is going to get so good it will be like watching a television show when you look at your screen.

And speaking of screens, could it be possible that we will soon see the day when the screen is separate from the main unit, making it easily upgradable. Will we see the day of large screen, waterproof 4k or 8k displays for our graphs? How big will the screens get – maybe 24 or 32 inches - or bigger? How will boats change to accommodate them?


Outboard Motors

What about fully electric outboards with the ability to give you all of that current outboard offer, and maybe more? Being fully electric/electronic my imagination runs wild with ideas about what they could do.

With the advancements in batteries and battery powered vehicles in the auto industry I believe we are not far off from seeing this become a reality.


So that's a start on where I think things could be headed.  How about you? What advancements in fishing gear, electronics, boating, trolling motors etc. do you believe will happen in the near or far future?

Merc already has an all electric motor; just got an email about it the other day.  I read very little about it though.

Kevlar rods ?

Fish finders are already video game like, no telling what the next version will be.

Haven't come close to understanding todays technology yet, so the next generation might as well be on the moon for me.  When I go out fishing it's all about clearing my mind, and just relaxing.  Last thing I want to do is struggle with technology!  I'm a firm believer in Keep It Simple, Stupid!

Resin used in glass hulls will see improvement. The use of nano particles will make a lighter and thinner hull with superior bonding and greater strength.
