Guys I'm getting desperate in my battle with gout. I'm talking searing pain that rotates from both feet. Wearing a shoe is impossible  as is a doctors visit since navigating the stairs is an invitation to break my neck.

I'm taking Colchicine and it's not doing anything. I can't take steroids, the other prescription treatment, because I'm fighting chronic kidney failure. My Dr says weak kidneys aren't filtering the uric acid, so it's just a vicious circle.

I even checked out chiropractic help. They said yes but said they are basically going to adjust my big toe. That just involves grabbing it and snapping it, which they do as a last resort because the pain is pretty much unbearable, as in passing out!

I'm desperate and open to anything!

Be well everyone.

I am sorry to hear that you are in such pain!  That gout hurts very horribly, I get it in my feet also.  I take tart cherry extract pills daily, it seems to keep the uric acid down.  They make it in a thick concentrate that you can drink, seems to help more quickly.  Hope it is something you can try and it helps you!

Get on Allopurinol ASAP, it's the first line treatment for acute gout pain.  Here's a link showing data, which appears relevant in your case....

Tart Cherry Juice works great, but you have to drink a lot. It's my beverage of choice with dinner these days.

Here's something that I try to follow. https://www.healthline.com/health/how-to-reduce-uric-acid#limit-purine--rich-foods

I sent the info on the less evasive medicine to my Dr. She agrees, but she won't start me on it until the severe gout is gone. Mild dose of prednisone for a week then evaluate.

Now to fine the cherry concentrate.

Thank you so much guys. It means a lot!

Prednisone works for me. I can literally feel your pain. Like walking on crushed glass.

The best place to find the cherry concentrate is usually the health food stores.  Around here it is stores like Earthfare and Fresh Thyme Markets.  Don't know any in your area but you can just look up health food stores and it should give you some ideas, online also would be a good place to purchase.  Really hope it helps, like I said I use the concentrate when mine gets really bad, because it works quicker.  I take a 1200mg capsule every night before I go to bed just to try and keep it from setting in.

My dude, I literally feel your pain. Cork knows my struggles all to well.

This is going to be a long post. Sorry for any typos.

I've been battling gout since I was 18, and I'm now 40.  It's absolutely terrible. I get it in my toes, ankles, knees, hands, and elbows. I have discovered my trigger foods, and I stay away from them. Beef jerky, and deer meat will put me down. Like you, I was in a viscous cycle with the meds and pain. I was going to a quick care or ER one to two times a month just for a steroid shot so I could function.  It took me telling my doctor that I legit contemplated suicide or amputation to stop the pain before they got serious with me. That was 12 years AFTER my first attack, so they finally sent me to a rheumatologist.  The first thing he said was to KEEP taking the preventative during an attack. If you stop, and the restart that will trigger an attack. Any high impact activity such as jogging, hiking, or anything that puts pressure on those joints can cause the crystals to break off and trigger another attack.

He put me on uloric for a preventative. The allopurinol after 12 years really screwed my liver up, and this med is better for that. Like you, I was done with steroids. The bloated me up terribly. So he started me on a very aggressive treatment plan.  I took my daily preventative, and a colchicine in the morning, and one in the evening. As you know, that will clean your intestines out. We did it for 30 days. After the 30 days I finally for the first time in over a decade felt great. I could actually jog and exercise again. I still watched my diet, took the tart cherry, and uloric. This all happened in about 2012/2013.

Fast forward to about 2019. My preventative prescription, and referral to the rheumatologist expired (TriCare). My military doc would not give me a prescription for the uloric.  They put  me in for a new referral, and after 3 weeks it was approved. Only issue is it took over 90 days just to get an appointment. By the time I finally got in I was set to retire, and then moved away the beginning of 2020. All my gout problems came back. All of them. I went to my new doctor this summer and explained to him my gout history and the aggressive treatment I was given way back in 2013. He put me back on it, and I have now been doing great for the last 6 months. I take my meds, tart cherry, and watch what I eat.

Feel free to PM me and I will gladly help with anything I can. I've researched the whole entire internet on gout. I honestly feel like an expert  lo

Great post and I'm a light weight compared to your suffering. They had to try me on steroids when my toe was so swollen the skin was splitting. It was a dark awful mess, bruising was so bad. Luckily the light dosage is knocking it out. We are going to regroup and try your suggestions when this flare up is gone.

You don't know how much that meant to me. Gout is something no one can comprehend until it strikes.

Thanks again!

I have nothing to add, but if I ever get it I now have some useful treatments, so thanks everyone.  I am getting older (Pushing 50) so I know I am going to start experiencing different ailments.

I am only 40 and have been getting on and off for about 5 years, so don't believe age has anything to do with it!!  haha

Allupurinol.

i have been on it for 10 years and in that time i have not had a single flare up.  just so you know, the pain is  just a flare up..you still have gout if you are happily motoring thru life pain-free.  i was told a person with gout cannot tolerate uric levels above 5(i forget the units).  normal is up to 8 IIRC..  so a good rheumetologist will dose the Allupurinol just to ride that line.  mine is 4.8 on most days.  one pill a day.

i think you cannot start Allupurinal if you are having a flare up.  i might be wrong.

it was a total game changer for me.  and i will take it forever.  my doc said you CANNOT manage it with diet.  unless you go full green drink for life.  the goal is to get the uric levels below 5.

One of my uncles suffered from severe gout from a young age. He finally found a doctor who put him on Allupurinol and it worked wonders.

I am so sorry for your level of pain, we can hear it in your urgency.  I am impressed by the level of response from the community brotherhood.  I hope you find some relief soon from the suggestions given.   God bless!
