I know that peacock bass do not like the cold. What are some tips and tactics for catching peas in the winter months when it gets colder?

One of the first things many are going to jump in and say is fishing with live bait, and they won't be wrong.

But if your an artificial bait enthusiast like me and many others, one of the things to keep in mind is to target them during the warmest part of the day.  :-*

I was out today after 3 days of weather in the 50's at night and the smaller P's would co-operate. No.7 floating Rapalas.

Don't get up early, sleep in.  Sunny days are best.  Use the correct lures.  If I could only pick one, it would be Gold and black #11 rapala jerk bait.  Work them fast, you can't out run a Pea, they like a commotion !!!!!!

I went out Friday 2/04/22 Eastside of the Alley. Saw a few small Peacocks floating , water temp was 65.

That's warmer compared to where I was. It was 60. Did see several pea's but they weren't active. Since then the bite has picked up again however.  ~shhh

They are so sensitive to cold weather.  I hope we don't have a massive kill like 10 years ago.  The deeper the waters the better, you always have seepage from the aqua at 72* in the deeper waters.  Peas are our local treasures. :'(

Our pea's are doing just fine. Yes the catch rates have dropped some, but prior to last weeks cold front, catch rates were ridiculous, 75 -100 pea's a day!!  One or two days of cold weather is not going to hurt our Peacock population one bit.

Remember the fish kill of 2009-10 was because we practically had 30 days straight of cold weather. We have not had anything come close to that in 12 years!!
