As many of you know, I went out fishing with FlatsnBays over 10 days ago. Flats being the outdoor writer that he is asked me a lot of great questions as it pertains to peacock bass fishing and my recent YouTube videos.

Being that I'm in a writing mood myself this morning, I decided to share one of our conversations in regards to hairjigs and peacocks.

Flats asked me why I turned to hair jigs versus traditional lures when peacock bass fishing.

With out divulging too much information. ;) Below are two reasons why I choose a hair jig versus traditional peacock lures.

1. I do not like dealing with treble hooks. I fish with them out of necessity of the situation, not because I enjoy fishing these style lures. Don't misunderstand me however,  treble lures are excellent fish catchers.
When targeting pea's it's unbelievable to me how many fish we miss throwing a lure with 6 hooks!!
With a hair jig, I find my hooksets are more secure and chances of landing a peacock are higher with a single hook versus a treble.

2. Matching the hatch, and it's something different.

Since my hair jigs are custom made compliments of BigJim. We matched a couple of the target species Peacocks love to eat.
Peacocks are ferocious protectors during their spawn, making them easier to target during this period. But when they are not spawning, targeting these fish takes some creativity at times.

Just like bass, Peacocks may become gun shy towards traditional lures. Anglers are forced to manipulate their approach just to a illcit a strike.
Hair jigs are not common lures to these fish, making them a viable alternative to use.
Next time out, consider a hair jig to mix things up when hunting for pea's.

Thanks for reading.

Capt. Lou was right on target. I was impressed at how well they liked the hair jig.
