Today I replaced the power pack on my Johnson Fast Strike 150.  It was an easy job and not much to it.  The new power pack also came with an optical sensor.  I did not replace it when I did the power pack but now I am thinking I probably should do that.  The optical sensor lives under the timing wheel on the top of the motor.  It actually is not a tough deal to change but does have a number of screws to remove.  The timing wheel is keyed and is simple to put back in the same position that it came from so once again no big deal.

Just thinking that maybe I should just go ahead and install the new sensor tomorrow just to make the job  complete.  The old sensor was replace a few years ago but not the power pack.  I guess it would be wise just to go ahead and do it.  If you have ever done this what is your opinion, Replace or leave it alone and use the new sensor for a spare?

Use the OLD sensor for a "spare".

I'd agree.  As long as you're not having a problem save it for when you need it.
Enjoying retirement in the great Pacific Northwest.  I've turned into a fair weather angler.  Why do it today when I can do it tomorrow?

Was not able to loosen the bolt on the timing wheel.  This is not an uncommon problem I have learned.  Will apply some chemicals to help loosen it up

Took the boat to the river today for a full test run.  It could not have been more perfect.  No misfires, No problem getting on plane, no bogging.  It just ran like a new motor.  Very powerful through the whole range.  I don't know if I fixed the problems but if todays run was any indication I may have finally corrected the problem.  Going back out tomorrow for some fishing and will see how it does.  The motor was smooth and sounded just great and of course it started very easily.  Not much more to say at this time other than I am a happy, happy, happy man.
