Could using a bead be affecting my bites on a wacky rig because my friend was using a wacky rig but without a bead and was doing much better
However when I see the fish they don't hesitate when I cast near them
And if so would using a smaller bead help

it's possible that your observations already have given you the answer.
curious as to WHY you use a bead with your wacky rig?

I use a bead on my buzztoads... helps shed weeds and I th ink assist in getting the bait to move better in the fish jaws... for better hook up ratio...  but curious as to the wacky rig application/theory?

Presenting the lure as natural as possible helps. Never seen a bead on a wacky rig.

It's why I use a bead I'll be looking for the next spot to cast and would end up doing that and probably was why the rod guides on my old pole was bust

kinda reminds me of that old doctor joke

'Hey doc, it hurts when I do this...'
well, stop doing that.

life is full of folks who choose to do something even when they know it's not the best approach.  it's all about personal choice.

Looking where I'm gonna take my next cast and I mean I wasn't sure if it was because I caught my new pb lmb and saw it eat it without hesitation but last weekend my friend did caught almost double fishing it identical to me with the exception being the bead

I'll add one last tip..... When the bait comes out of the water on the retrieve.... stop reeling.. .. Just a thought.
