Evergreen SS Frog

You guys know how I'm a sucker for FROGS. I came across this Evergreen SS Frog as I stocked up on a few more Spro's

Although this frog is on the upper end of my budget, I found them priced equivalent to a LiveTarget Frog. Still pricey, but I decided to purchase one to check it out. The unique cupped mouth and furry tail, intrigued me.

I should have it by next week, so maybe I will do a frogging video

on it.

I've heard good things about these frogs. Evergreen makes great stuff. Very high quality and well worth the little extra price tag.

The mouth of that looks very similar to their Showerblow's (the best Spook style bait I've found). Highly recommend trying that bait if you like spook style baits.

not to disagree, but I'll disagree: I see the showerblow as a pencil popper more than a spook.

which makes that frog really interesting in terms of how it might sound with a walk...

and of course, Lou, you had to use a bluegill patterned bait. maybe dip that tail in a little blue and then chartreuse dye to get that great 'bluegill' tail color?
(yellow and blue make green!)

My HONEST first thoughts were: That Tail will only last for a few Gar Hits.

The Guys that Fish for Gar use a nylon rope and fray it sort of like that tail. The Gar bite the rope then get their teeth caught up in the fibers and that is how they catch them.

I'd think that Tail would act the same way. I know I get several Gar hits on Frogs and have to think your going to hook into a few of them at least.

Be interesting to see how it plays out.

Many Some Years ago a few of us were fishing off of a Dock at night in the Intercoastal waterway. Even using live Bait no one was catching or even getting hits.

I put on a Fresh bait and when I cast it out went to high and smacked it right into the Bridge the Dock was under. That bait just laid on the surface quivering a bit when SMASH a Huge Snook grabbed it and took off. Ran me under the Dock and broke me off.

Point is the ONLY Bite of the night came from a fish dying and laying on the surface quivering, which is what that bait is imitating. Should work well I'd think.

Hmmmm... you raise a good point about the gar. I fish in the gar capital of the world.

But that is something I will have to keep in mind, and report back on with you guys.

I'd love to get a photo from the top down. So I could look at the back. My biggest hang up with Soft Side or Hollow Body frogs is the hook angle. So many really tweak the hooks back towards the bait. This obviously makes them very weedless but it also makes it harder for the hook to work. It has to spread apart while trying to force through the meat. So a hook that is more parallel with the body is a better concept IMO.

Spro is the closest and requires the least adjustment. From this photo, this one looks like it might be something I'd like to try.

The Evergreen HB frog arrived!!
As I side note, I also bought a few Spro Pop 70's as well, and I will use one as reference of comparison to the Evergreen.

Side by side comparisons.

Specs:

- Pop 70 Spro: 3/4 oz and 70mm length

- Evergreen: 11/16 oz and 77mm (3")

First impression of the Evergreen:

I was impressed with how pliable this frog is. Which also concerns me with how much abuse it could absorb. Spro's are tough frogs and can handle a fair amount of abuse before they begin to fail.

The narrow hook design is also interesting. I haven't fished this style of HB hook placement before.

The rear counter balance weight is molded to support the hooks. Another detail that caught my eye.

Definitely looking forward to trying out this frog next week. Stay tuned, for my on the water review/video.

I also missed this. The Evergreen has a small drain hole right underneath the furry tail.

Upon continued further inspection...

The hooks have slots molded on to the body of the frog, making what I believe is as a true weedless frog.

The design has been thought of well, I sure hope the durability factor was also thought of. Soft frog designs do help on the hook up ratio, but their lifespan is a short one. @ the price point this frog is coming in at, I'm really curious on how well it holds up.

ooftah, Lou. can't tell: is it a boy or a girl?
don't overlook the guage of the hooks. yes they're set narrower. but the wire also looks a little lighter guage. for all the bass guys who are 'certain that no one swings harder': might be curious as to potential hook flex? then again, a smaller hook with less radius should help with that.
got a few of these headed my way. was out yesterday and saw some of the first 'cheese' setting up. it was still green, but the bubbles were there...
