What is your favorite Buzzbait brand / model  with skirt as well as favorite size buzzbait ? ... I'm thinking that 3/8th oz. is a good weight to start with along with a brand / model with skirt  that is built well,  has quality components , good hook - and lastly will run straight (i.e. resist the "hard left" turn while reeling) ... The short list which may meet the above specs. from local big fishing stores are : Strike King Tour Grade Buzzbait or the War Eagle buzzbait (both brands in 3.8th oz. size as well as offered in the preferred black color and white color skirts) ... Your experiences and suggestions ?

Ohio Pro Lures......long hook & shank so less misses. The bass will get the hook and not the spinner.....all black but I do have a couple with silver blades

I second the Ohio Pro Lures, also the new Picasso Rusty Squeaker is a new favorite of mine!  That thing is the absolute loudest one I have tried straight out of the package.

Actually, my favotite are a few that I picked up at an outdoor show.  No brand, cheaply made, light wire, constantly need to be tuned and more importantly, catch fish.   Branded baits, I like the 3/8 oz Cavitron, and the 1/8 oz Strike King, black or white.

Smallie_Stalker

My favs are ones I assemble myself on the Pro-Planer heads from Lure parts Online. Day in and day out a 1/4 oz. In black head, black Strike king skirt with some silver flake in it and a gold blade works for me no matter the water color. I also make them in white and chartreuse and 3/8 and 1/2 oz as well as double armed buzzers, some with the "blade within a blade" design.

For store bought buzzers there are a few I like.  The Accent Lures Buzz B-2 is a double armed buzzer that actually floats when you stop it. That can be really killer when you see a wake following the bait and you stop it all of a sudden. You can also fish it really slow because it doesn't sink.

The old Cav-L-Trons are great - if you can find them. Fleck (now owned by Lunker City) used to make one with a plastic blade that made no noise except the the gurgling of the water. It was great on those very early mornings when all of nature was quiet. you could run one of these without really making too much noise.  And of course the Strike Kings and Terminators.

That's my $.02

The good ol' Lunker Lure has always been good. The Cavitron is really good also along with the Croc o Gator.
Another one to check out is the bare Dirty Jigs. It's designed to use with a toad rather than skirt.
I use a toad on most of mine anyway, They cast better and catch just as many fish.
I like 1/2 or 1/4 oz.

Of the ones that you mentioned being sold locally, I'd recommend the War Eagle. That's what I use. It is just the right size and squeak and is made really well.

Strike King, 3/8 and 1/2 ounce, I modify a bit. I bend the wire coming out of the head down at a 45 degree angle then 3/16 of an inch or so bend it up at 45 degrees so it's pointed straight back, helps the bait stay upright instead of laying on it's side. Sometimes I bend the wire down so the blades smack the wire causing a clacking, at times it works better than other things. I also use a stinger hook 98% of the time, even in cover, the bass have a habit of missing the bait.

*Do you find you use the 3/8th oz. size more often or the 1/2 oz. size ?

Oldfart9999

Probably the 3/8 size, I used both shallow as well as in deeper water, If I thought a buzzbait should be working I experimented to see which and what speed worked the best. I misspoke when I talked about the wire bending modification, the bend is before the body, that allows the hook to follow a bit deeper in the water, it should be before the head bend the wire up at a 45 degree angle then bend at a 45 down so it looks like a backward z.

kind of partial to 1/8 ounce buzzbaits with the smaller blades.  adding a plastic trailer and the weight gets up to around 1/4+
quieter.  smaller.  stealthier.  just the ticket for some of those wary OLD SMART fish.

Cavitron. 1/4oz. Black skirt, red blade. Crimp the rivet down. Take a file to the bottom of the blade where it comes in contact with the rivet. You can thank me later  ~shade

War Eagle in 1/2 ounce and the Accent finesse which is 5/16 I think.  Both get toads.  To be honest, I don't fish a buzzbait that much.

Guess I should also add - if I want to throw a big bulky trailer, I like the Accent Jacob Wheeler buzzbait. It's got an awesome bait keeper to it.

Don't see anyone talking about sound.  do you like your buzz baits to make noise.  To clack or not to clack, that is the question.  In addition do you ever use the bait with two props?

chrisD46

Good comments here - I have ordered a couple of War Eagle , Booyah and Strike King Buzzbaits to play around in clacker and squealer versions with first and all in the 3/8th oz. size . White with silver blade , black with gold blade and black with black blade . If I feel the need to add the 1/2 oz. size then I will add only if the 3/8th oz. size is lacking in some department (i.e. more speed needed) . *Interesting to note - I have only seen one Pro throw a 1/2 oz. buzzbait to date - while most are throwing 1/4 oz. and a few throwing  3/8th oz. sizes . As for speed of the buzzbait , interesting to note that depending on rod angle (high or low) can change the speed of a buzzbait along with a thin or thick mono line so I expect the 3/8th size to be pretty versatile and if I need more weight to cast when the wind picks up there are always trailer options to increase / decrease weight . At approx. $9 ea. for the better buzzbaits - I'll wait to see if I have serious holes in my approach then decide to go up or down in weight (i.e. hard bait colors and sizes I am more careful in decisions versus soft plastics due to cost) .

Bud, I mentioned bending the head down to make the blade clack against the wire frame, I've tried the clackers and while they work I don't care for them; extra cost and with bending the head down I can also bend it up so it doesn't clack, gives me 2 options without having to retie. The buzzbait by it's nature is a noisy bait and at times more noise is better, sometimes not, only one way to find out. I've tried the 2 blade  baits from Lindy, when they're on nothing beats them, also, they run straight. The normal single bladed baits can be made to run right or left by bending the wire, they can be made to run into dock posts and other cover.

I build my own (of course), and all are 100% Lunker Lure style (offset blade). Ninety-nine percent of the time I use a 3/8 ounce head with the 1/2 ounce size blade. I can make this bait do what I want, i.e. run straight or keel to the side, with just a few adjustments. My baits also "squeal". A lot.

I use a 1/4 ounce bait of the same design when I'm having issues with the bite, and once in a great while I'll throw a "Yum Yum", a 1/8 ounce mini-bait with a plastic three-blade. When it works, it's killer.

If you ever come across the old Bill Norman "Triple WIng" buzz bait in a 1/4 ounce size, snatch them up. If anything, I'll take them off your hands. Rigged with a Mister Twister twin tail this thing set records.

I just interviewed Jacob Wheeler for an upcoming article on buzzbaits for Bass Angler Magazine. I learned more about buzzbait fishing talking to him than I ever did. I just turned my article in so it should be in an upcoming issue. Keep an eye out. I think y'all will enjoy it.

I just got one of the buzzbaits from Jigmasters. I have used it once, caught a 4 and a 3.5 on it. It tracks and casts well.
