I knew that Havasu grew them big, heck there are several professional bass anglers that go over there to fish for the giant bluegill each year.... but a six pounder  :shocking: :shocking:

hear what you're saying.  but those 12" and over 'bream' are just so special.  way better in the water than in the grease.  personal opinion. ;D

Mike Cork

I don't catch'em that big, reckon I would release for a new fight at that size as well.

That would be one hell of a fight on ultra light gear.  Even the small ones are fun  UL when you're fishing with little kids.
Enjoying retirement in the great Pacific Northwest.  I've turned into a fair weather angler.  Why do it today when I can do it tomorrow?

would think a 5# redear would be a handful on just about any kind of t ackle.
fact, I can see where a heavier meat stick would be desirable.

That is a HUGE One for sure.

When I was a Kid one of the Men from our Church took me and 3 of my Cousins fishing. We were wading in the shallows and casting worms around stumps for whatever.

One cousin catches a huge fighting fish. Turns out to be about a 11 inch Bluegill. On the next 3 cast he and the other 2 (I was the smallest and couldn't cast that far) each caught one about 12 inches. They all laughed and tossed them back in.

I kept telling them they had caught the Pennsylvania State Record but they just laughed at me and ignored me.

When I got home I looked it up. YUP The Record was 10 3/4 inches. They EACH caught a New State Record and tossed them back.

That's HUGE! I have a 2 lb. 4 oz.  bream on my wall. It has shoulders like a linebacker and is named "Dick Butkus". I'm  looking at Mr. Butkus as I type and can't visualize a bream that's 3 times his size.  The World Record bream has to be a genetic freak.

here's another site (flw)

as you read through it, note the frequency of 5+ pound redears.  and these would be the one's 'reported'.

figure it kind of gets like Dale, MIke and Steve in IBASS:  oh crap, not 'another' 21 inch bass!  as they boatflip them 'cause they're just no help at all.
lo
QuoteAccording to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, redear sunfish have reduced quagga mussel numbers by as much as 25 percent.

maybe zebras/quaggas might do for redears what the gobies have done for smallies?

I've caught my share of pounders, but never a two. It was always a treat to find a fishery where you can do that. And the FIGHT.

You know, it's sad. Or a blessing. When you catch a 21" bass that doesn't help your string. I've done it in IBass, and in real derbies. What a shame. And it don't happen very often.

I saw a mount of one many years ago that was near 4 pounds and it didn't look real just because of the size. Can't imagine one over 6 pounds. My PB covered a dinner plate after frying, best way I know to measure one.
Retired and loving every minute of it!

Definitely the bream of a lifetime!!!

Bluegill sometimes aggravate the hell out of me when I'm bass fishing, but I sure wouldn't mind quite as much if they weighed in like that one.

dale, times like 'that' I think it just helps a guy to laugh a little at silliness of the whole thing.
