I recently got a 93 BassCat Pantera 2 and the hole shot is terrible. I have a mariner magnum 3 2.5 liter 150 hp engine and a High-five prop. Was just wondering what I should do to fix this. thanks!!

First question is what's the pitch of your prop? I would think it should be about 21 pitch. More than 21P is too much prop for that motor.

Second question is what's your wide open throttle RPM?

I've never run a 5 blade, but I love a 4 blade, they're great in rough water, make for great shots, and greatly improve handling. People sometimes have a hard time accepting the fact that they need to reduce pitch when adding more blades because they don't want to give up any speed, even though the difference is only 1 or 2 mph.

Some additional information would be helpful.  To answer your question information about your set up can reveal potential issues.  First of all would be prop to pad measurement, Motor RPMs at wide open throttle to include GPS MPH.  And as Jim suggests what pitch prop are you running.  That five blade can be quite a drag on your motor if pitch is too much.

I might also add that your boat is rated for 200HP.  The 150 you are currently running just may not have enough of what you need to get optimum performance.  A solution for your existing motor may not fully meet your performance expectations.

I believe the pitch is 21 would have to run by the boat tomorrow to know for sure though, my WOT Rpm's are 4500 which I just learned is a little low. It is odd because when I give it gas to get out of the hole it speeds up to about 3000 rpm's and then takes FOREVER to get to 3500 or so which is where it begins to tip down. Hope this helps.

The spec for that motor the best I can tell indicate that you should be turning 5500 RPMs with a max up close to 6000.

The pitch sounds about right. Another thing you may not want to think about is the engine itself. A compression check is quick and cheap.

It does sound like a cylinder might be down.  That can be a lot of things but a compression check is warranted.  If everything is ok then perhaps something in the coils, spark plug wires or even the power pack.  It can be a real tester to find the real gremlin in these cases.  I know that from personal current experience with my 1991 Johnson Fast Strike.

i had a 85 pantera that i ran a merc 150 for a while.  i ran a 24p turbo prop.  it came right out of the hole, and turned 6000 rpm.  you could have a compression issue.
