Anyone still talk Loch Raven on here anymore?  Any ideas for locating maps with named coves?  Also would like to chat with someone familiar with April fishing?

I grew up in MD, spent most of my life living & fishing there ( 59 years) but have been gone several years now. I would be glad to chat fishing with you, help anyway I can.

I only fished at Loch Raven a couple of times, and that was from shore. A fly fishing club I used to be a member of did most of the members lived in that area, and we did a clean up at Loch Raven and we spent several hours picking up trash there. Then many of the guys went fishing afterwards. That was most of my fishing experience there.

I would guess there's US Geological Survey maps available for that lake & others. The old "Fishing In Maryland" publications had maps too, but they were not real detailed, and those haven't been around for a good while now. I wore them cover reading them when I was a kid.  lo

The MD DNR website has a lot of good information on it too, if you spend the time searching around on there.

I fished the rivers around the state a lot more than the reservoirs. Access was better for the rivers.

Hey I appreciate it the reply.  I've fished LR quite a few times but not in the past few years.  I'm familiar with Peerces, Schoolhouse. and Warren Rd.  Just trying to find exactly where Hampton, Deadman's and anything else.   Also looking for info about whether to fish north or south of Dulaney Valley Rd.  in April.  I know people love "their spots", just looking for general info.

Thanks

I'm not too sure I can help you with those specifics. I recall at one time a lot of folks fished at the bridge on Dulaney Valley Rd, but don't even know if that's still possible to do. 9/11 changed a lot of things with getting close to some of these structures and I never kept up with it all.

I remember folks fishing from the shoreline at Warren Rd years ago, but again not sure now if that's possible.

I read recently about an access point on the Gunpowder now being off limits for folks who used to park & walk into the park. Most of that was due to people being pigs leaving their trash, and because of thefts.

That could be the case with Loch Raven too. While I still lived in MD, some places I used to park along the road & go fishing had been posted for no parking. That's one of many reasons I spent more time fishing on the Eastern Shore than I did anywhere else.  Much has changed over the years.

I wish I could give you some better information, and sorry I can't.  :(

Hey Crofton1,
You'll definitely want to grab a map. I'm in northern MD so I go to B&B Tackle in Hanover, PA. They have maps for a good number of reservoirs. They'd probably be able to sell and ship one to you also. https://www.bblurestackleshop.com/  There are likely other places to pick one up too that are probably more convenient for you including online.

The great news about the Loch is that you don't need to know where Goetzes, Merryman's, or the Powerlines are to catch fish. Putting in time in a cove and fishing baits you have confidence in will likely produce. Some of my favorites include Pop-r's, Lipless Cranks, and plastics. The locations you mentioned, "Peerces', Schoolhouse, and Warren are great places to use these baits and likely ones you are confident with. My advice, grab a map, review this board(alot of good info.), and most importantly, put your time in. You'll learn the best places to fish Loch very quickly! Have fun!
