4-5" so far and still falling. 16° which is almost the coldest I've ever seen here before. Roads are covered this time unlike a few weeks ago as we had a lot of sleet yesterday before the snow.

1" of ice with 4" of snow on top so far and still falling. 17° here at my place on the southern half of Toledo Bend.
Stay safe out there.

The sleet before the snow has made the roads miserable up here. Best to stay home. Supposed to hit upper thirties on Friday.

snow should help?  with ground not frozen, it might help as the stuff melts from the ground up?

BassmanRudy

Wellp it normally would but since we had a full day of sleet yesterday and were below freezing the ground is solid.

just saying:  growing up somewhat north of the mason-dixon line, it takes more than a few days to get the ground to freeze.

Mike Cork

They NWS has our ground temp at 37. So while it will take a while with these negative windchills I reckon there is a point of thaw.

My thoughts are it's dangerous, if it melts slightly then freezes, its slick as snot LOL Lived in Missouri for a few years and have a busted tail bone to prove it  :surrender:

yep.  it's cold for those not used to it.  not dressed/prepared.

on top of that:  you all keeping the power on?  or are you dealing with blackouts on top of this?

BassmanRudy

Power for some has come and gone as swepco thinks "cutting power to some for a while saves all". Why don't they STOP shuttering perfectly good power plants?!?! F crapco they sure don't pay those people back for lost items!

I just went and walked our street and since it's down to 12° the tire ruts are frozen solid. The wifey is supoosed to go into work tomorrow at 10 so we'll see how her 4wd truck handles it all.

Yup, I have a buddy in Virginia who had one for a while. Besides being a practical means of traveling on snow, he found that while having it strapped down to the trailer, it made an awesome snowblower. ;D

Since yesterday we have had no power for almost 24 hours, which meant no heat.  The fire place here is old and never been serviced, hence it doesn't work.  But we did stay in the 50s in the house so we were good.  When the power went on, the heater ran all day so far to keep it in the mid 60s in here.  This is a pretty cold house for being made of brick.

We thought we had frozen pipes, but it seems that the city had a problem with the water plant and it took a dump, so now we have to wait for them to thaw it out before we know if we have frozen pipes or not.

All we had Saturday was sleet and enough white stuff to make it look like frothy milk all over the 6 inches of ice. Yesterday it melted and most of it is gone to become black ice.  The main bridge, the Fred Hartman, is closed for the 3rd day.

Cell phones are non existent, 911 is broken, internet is very spotty, I think it is because of the rolling power outages that are playing with the relay stations.

I lived in Chicago for 40 years and must say that they did winters well.  We kind of missed it a bit here.  We actually do better in hurricanes, to be honest.

But then again with God's grace and blessing we will survive another adventure.

Been praying for you Pferox, we heard yesterday that all of Houston was without power for a day and not looking good for restore.

Glad you finally got it back.

We lost our water supply last night sometime. Said we won't have it back until at least Friday and then a boil order until they can flush it. I've got a case or two of bottled water and more soda than I care to admit or let the kids drink ;PEP)

Jim sorry to hear that about the power issue.  We have a lot of people in our daily prayers.  Its supposed to start warming up here tomorrow. They have our water shut off now.  The wife has 3 of our bath tubs filled with water.  I got extra drinking water out in the garage that will last till next week.

I was talking with Dwayne yesterday up in Anchorage Alaska.  It was warmer there than here in Belton Texas.

Thanks guys, we're doing ok, actually it is quite an adventure to write about.  Better than seeing the political stuff on Facebook when I can get on.

Jan is from Montana and I'm from Chicago, so this cold thing isn't our first rodeo.  The water and power thing is, but I guess it is either poor management or they never expected to see something like this, so we have to take that in stride..... for now.

We keep busy too, spent the day harvesting water from the roof for flushing toilets at least.  A couple of hours ago we got a notice that they got the water plant thawed out and running, and we will be pressured up eventually to regular water again with a boil order.  Sounds like I just got piped in roof water.  Now I have a bunch of buckets full of harvested water sitting here in the way.

Still wondering about the water heater, not sure if it will recover, but hey that is the landlord's problem.
