What is the proper way to set/adjust a baitcast reel (in general)?  What are some things to make them cast to their fullest and limit backlash?  Also, what all needs to be cleaned/serviced, etc.?

Hi. I'll attach some pics to help explain. The yellow circled knob is your "major adjustment" point. When you depress the thumb bar to cast I like to have my bait drop down pretty smooth and when it hits the ground stops without backlashing. So play with this major adjustment knob til it does that. The blue adjustment side comes in a myriad of different formats but the basics are 1 is loose and 10 is tight. Can start at 10 and work back to 5 as you get better. There are some internal pieces (the red things in the 2d pic) and full down is "off" and back 1 notch is "on". Can start with 4 on and 2 off and as you get better go to 2 on and 4 off or 3 on 3 off.

Also if you spool it up full then walk off enough line that you consider to be longer than your usual cast can add electrical tape to the spool at that point then wind your line back in. If you backlash afterwards then it will only go to the tape Not the full spool!

Make sure you wind the line onto the reel with even tension.
