After posting a couple of videos where I have had some success on a jerkbait, a number of folks have asked me for details on setups and such. That spurred me to doing a video on that very subject. Hopefully you guys will find something in here that you find helpful as well.

Steve, tks for putting the video together for us.  I'm going to go back and relook at my setup I use.  What little jerkbait fishing I do is with a 7ft MH action rod with a fast tip.  I'll have to also learn to slow it down  and jerk it on a slack line also.

That slack line jerk is absolutely key! If you don't remember anything else from any jerkbait tip ever, remember that.

i guess my question is - how much do you like for the bait to move from one side to the other generally speaking.

Generally speaking? That's a tough one. Generally, I want it to move more as the water is warmer. For example, that AIM 9 has a very aggressive slash action. You can definitely walk it like a spook but underwater. That one is my go-to in warm water. Not to say that it's not great in cold water either. When the water is at its coldest, the smithwick rogue is very hard to beat. That roll action is just killer that time of year.

I did not. Try as I might, I just can't get the opportunity to draw the string back on a deer this season. I've had them in range but not been able to draw the bow for various reasons.

I guess my question when i asked about how much you want the bait to move generally speaking revolved more around the slack line.  is there much of a bow in your line when keeping it slack and do you keep more line out if you want it to slash more side to side without really moving the bait directionally?

yea, i know, hard question to answer -- as the answer is it depends on what the fish tell you.  But, is there a general amount of slack line you start with?

No matter what, I'd say that the amount of slack is the same. Now it's hard to say how much slack that is. It's definitely not a lot. I'd say it's not much more than you would have when walking a topwater.

Pointing the rod back towards the bait is really just a technique to use if you aren't doing a good job of twitching it with slack in the line. To be honest, rarely actually do that. But even so, it doesn't not hurt the hook set. Watching that line is key. It will jump when you get a bite. Always does.
