If you caught a state record fish while shore fishing what could you use to keep it alive while taking it to a bait store to get it certified then back so you could release it

Capt. BassinLou

Would I walk around with this type of apparatus when I'm bank fishing? Heck no!! But, that's me.
This would mean, I would have to have walk around carrying this thing every time I go bank fishing. NOT PRACTICAL. Here's what practical to me. A good smart phone with a camera, a reputable scale (with extra batteries), and tape measurer.

True, but you need to consider the distance you are from your car.

Usually fishing with a buddy so I could keep the fish in the net in the water while they went and got it

Then have it, good luck.

There's a lot more to getting a certified state record than taking it to a store to get certified. Generally speaking, if you catch a state record, it's pretty hard to keep said fish alive through the process of certification.

Still worth it to try
Just trying to come up with something that would keep it alive

If you have all the paperwork handy, a certified scale close by, and a biologist willing to identify the fish at a moments notice, you could try a very large cooler with an aerator.

Thx
In ny you just need to go to a bait store so they can measure and certify it

From the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation:

State Record

If you catch a really big fish, you may have a new State Record. The State Record Program recognizes those anglers who break current New York State records for any of the 42 eligible fish species. Anglers receive a custom engraved plaque, an Angler Achievement Award lapel pin, and a Certificate of Achievement.

How Do You Participate?

To participate in New York State's Angler Achievement Awards Program, simply follow these guidelines:

Fish must be taken by angling in New York State waters in accordance with New York State fishing regulations.
Fish must meet the minimum qualifying weight or length for that species and the entered category.
Fish entered in the Annual Award and State Record categories must be weighed on a certified scale by the owner of the scale or an employee, and must be witnessed by at least one other person.
Fish submitted as a potential State Record entry must be identified by a DEC biologist or a designee.
Qualifying fish must be entered on an official entry form or facsimile.
All entries must be accompanied by a clear, sideview photograph of the fish or the angler with the fish.
Entry forms must be received by DEC's Bureau of Fisheries within 30 days of the catch.

Can't say. You'd have to get in touch with the New York DEC, and ask them. While you have them on the phone, you should also ask them to send you all of the paperwork (downloadable possibly), list of current certified scale locations (if they have any), and any contact information, including phone numbers of anyone needed (Biologist etc.) to certify a potential state record fish that you want to keep alive if possible.
