2008 Evinrude E-Tech Question

Looking to buy a 2008 stratos 294xl with a 200 evinrude outboard. I'm not too familiar with evinrudes and was hoping to get reviews/advice. The guy who I'm buying the boat from took it to the shop for an inspection. Everything on the boat checks out, however, the only thing that caught my attention was the compression check. The test showed 60 psi on all 6 cylinders. To me, 60 psi seem very low, am I correct to think this?

That's an awesome boat, but 60psi is way too low. They should be in the 110-120 neighborhood and it's very unlikely that all cylinders would be exactly the same. It sounds like that motor needs a rebuild of powerhead replacement. Figure around $5000-$6000.

If memory serves "Rude is no more so most likely any parts will be after market, check the reviews of any maker of parts you need if you go that route.

Thanks for the replies. In speaking with 3 different Evinrude certified shop they all said the same thing. Compression shouldn't be that low and advises that it could lead up to expensive repairs. With such being the case, I'm going to pass on this deal. Thanks again for the replies.

I compression check is easy to do on your own. Go to a parts house and get a tester (you can rent them if you don't want to buy) and remove the plugs and screw the tester in and check for yourself.

Then if you get more respectable numbers you know two things, one the motor might be okay and two, the shops he took it to can't be trusted and you need to find a shop.

A boat is large investment and a continual investment. B.O.A.T. stands for Break Out Another Thousand... If you get into a rig that has issues this could be your new moto. Just make sure you're comfortable with everything before signing papers and if that means you have to pay a different shop an hours labor to make sure, I promise it's worth it.

As far as the quality of Evinrude motors, all brands are good all brands have bad apples. In today's age of communication and high tech equipment, if you don't keep up the consumer leaves you behind. AND tells the world about a bad experience. I wouldn't be afraid of the brand, just make sure you're getting a good one.
