Recently the fuel gauge in my boat stopped working. Initially, I thought it would be an easy fix (either the fuel sender or gauge itself). After replacing both still no luck. I proceeded to check the voltage at the gauge; meter read 12.5 volts, so we are good there. I set up a mock system and both the new parts and old parts seem to be working fine.

The issue I'm having is when I turn the key to the "on position", the needle moves towards the empty position and seems to get stuck there. Any ideas what could be causing this issue?

Polarity possibly?  Try switching the wires at the sender or at the back of the gauge.

It sounds as though your wire from the sending unit is shorted against something. You can test and confirm by running new wires from the gauge to the sending unit.

If one is shorted, the level of difficulty to replace depends on how the wires are routed and if they are bundled into a harness. It may be easier to leave the old wire in the hull and run a new wire.

Have you checked the float in the tank? If that isn't the fault then it's a problem in the wiring, should be a relatively easy fix.
