I'm not sure what you mean by non DC but when it come's to electronics it's all about budget.
What are you looking to spend ?

Non dc as in I don't have to lug around a battery looking for a rechargeable battery ,portable mount. For a kayak I would say price range below $500 not looking for a fixed mount needs to be permanently connected to a 12vdc power source

Ive never seen one that didn't run off a marine battery other than some of the old portables and ones designed for ice fishing.
In that price range the Garmin striker is pretty good, also the Lowrance hook series. I havn't had Humminbirds in years but they were fine.
Really depends on if you want down Imaging and or side imaging along with 2d sonar.

Years and I mean years ago, Humminbird made a Portable Unit that could run off of a 12-volt battery OR D-Cells Batteries. Don't know if they still do.

However, check with the guys in the Kayak boards as several of them use a small portable 12-volt battery just for their electronics.

That is probably what I will use when I eventually get a yak.

You wont find anything worth a damn that doesnt use a battery. That said, you really don't need a big battery to run a sonar. I have a 7ah battery on my echomap. Battery weighs 4 pounds and lasts 5 or 6 hours running contour mapping.

I saw the rave reviews on the striker but was a little weary of a $150 fish finder

I've seen the 7inch striker and it's good . The 2d is impressive and the down imaging was good.
They do not have mapping as I recall.
I know of guys who just run the Humminbird for nothing but the mapping, no transducer, and Lowrance or Garminn for the 2d,DI, SI,.
If you don't need the mapping I wouldn't be afraid of the Striker at all.
