Picked up a Berkley Choppo 90 today since I was at BPS for something else. I blame MLF for this purchase....

I'll give this lure a shot sometime this week when I go back to fish the swamp. ;)

Hang onto your rod and make sure the batteries are good in your pacemaker.... The strikes on these styles of baits are amazing. Even two pounds hit this like ten pounders for some reason.

Really curious about the performance to the bait.  I have come to believe that a stop/start/wiggle presentation works best for baits like this and the bass seem to hit them just they start their motion after a stop/start/wiggle presentation style.  Do you guys notice the same thing?  I see a lot of folks complaining about lack of success with a whopper plopper but also notice they seem to be in a sling and wind presentation style.

Over here on our shallow lakes a slow steady retrieve bring about the most violent strikes I've ever witnessed. I don't do well with a stop and go but our forage during the summer months is way different than most. I watched bass eating baby snakes on top of the vegetation last time out...

Watched a baby turtle scooting across matted coontail as fast as he could and a 4 pounder kept blowing him out of the water. Bass went hungry  :surrender:

That's for sure... I quickly learned they will eat anything they think they can get in their mouths...

Witnessing the baby snakes and turtle blow ups must have been awesome!! With the volume of baby alligators we have around, I wonder how many fall prey to very BIG bass?

Mike Cork

I'm sure a ton of them.  :-* Image your gator population, each pair having 20 babies, somethings eating them...

Just came back from throwing the Choppo 90 at my neighborhood park for about 30 min, before another line of storms blew threw.

I'm familiar with this style of bait since I have the big 120 Whopper plopper. This little Choppo 90 is a noisy little lure. The plop,, plop,,,plop,,, plop,,, can be heard from quite the distance. I especially like the additional action of rolling from side to side during the retrieve.

Unfortunately I came home empty handed, but I think this lure will see its fair share of action when I fish it in the Everglades.  :-* .... soon!!  ~shhh

I hear good things about the choppo. I like the wopper plopper a lot. might have to add one of those to the box, the time for them is here.

I will be giving my Choppo 90 its first real "tryout" in the Everglades tomorrow, let's see how well it does.

You'd have to add me to the List of guys that has never caught a fish on one of those style baits.

Bought two W P's in different colors and size and threw them a lot at first.

Never had a single hit.

Well... my skunk streak continues on this style of lure. Not the lures fault, the bass were holding in cover, ruling out this style of lure. I'm sure my time will come when this lure shines.

I'll bet at night it would be a killer!   Just watch for the gators.

Can't watch for those gators its night time!!
Kidding aside, I'm sure it will be an effective night time lure.

I've used both the Choppo and the Plopper; I like them both and have caught plenty of fish on both.....I will admit I like the price tag on the Choppo better.

I think the Choppo 90 would be good in Bone , Shad or Ghost in Spring (during the shad spawn) as well as when bass are busting shad on the surface during the Summer ... I'm thinking the Choppo 105 in a Bluegill color would be good to have during the Blue Bill Spawn in late Spring thru Summer ... In the Fall the Choppo 120 in Bone or a Shad color would be good in lakes where big Gizzard shad are present . Of course , other sizes of the Choppo + color selections would be worth while having .

My skunk streak continues with my Choppo.  lo lo Threw it on Lake Hatch in Central FL for our FL M&G this past wknd and I got one missed blow up!!  ~xyz ~rant  lo

I have used the whopper ploppers a lot. Like any other lure you have to experiment all the time to get the retrieve they are looking for.
I have burned, slow, stop and go, ripped, and deadsticked them. All of these have gotten bites.

Mike.
Wait till a smallie hits one. WOW!!!

That will always make most topwaters better. Just not on any that you walk.

I hate all of this new stuff. I like my old stuff.

But.

Those big-headed green SOB's flat DESTROY this type of bait. Like WOW. I did buy a 90 series WP a couple of years ago that just doesn't work. I've bent on it but it still hangs u enough so that the whole bait spins. The main wire is just a little too short.

Glad I'm not the only one to have that experience with the 90. I need to pickup a 110.

I've been a big fan of the Whopper Plopped 90 but there's one problem, it spins and twists your line up. The other size WPs don't do that. I just tried the Choppo 90 and really liked it. No spin!! I bought it in the black and chrome.
