At those prices you can't go wrong with either reel. Just as an fyi in case you didn't know this, all Shimano reel numbers that end with a 1 are left-hand retrieve.

Not sure which side you crank on so just thought I'd mention it.

Can I ask where you found the SLX 151 for $80 ?

Thanks! Yes, I'm right handed and crank on the left with my spinning rods so figured that would be easiest.

Shimano on sale at sportsman's warehouse. Never bought from them so not sure how good they are.

You are safe ordering from them, heard nothing but good things about them!

I didn't read your post well the first time I guess, I see you mentioned Tatula also. I posted I've been loving my Fury, but I also got a new Tatula this winter and have been loving that rod also. It's hard to do a comparison because my rods are totally different. The Tatula is a MH/F casting and the Fury is a ML/F spinning. I need to catch some more fish on the Fury, and catch some more on the Tatula that aren't on moving baits, and I can give a little better input. The Tatula feels lighter. Both are balanced well. I don't think you could go wrong with either one. I haven't used a Bass X yet.

Saw a local store has the dobyns champion xp 703c on sale and I can get for around 160. Would that be a better first casting rod than the fury 734 i was looking at??

Thanks!

The Champ will be lighter and more sensitive. A 4 power like that Fury is going to be a little better at being an all around workhorse rod but the 3 power Champ is no slouch. It's sweet spot seems to be about 3/8 oz. but you could go a little higher maybe a 1/2 oz. Anything above that and you are going to probably going to start to feel the rod working harder.

Dobyns Rods   Titan Tungsten   Abu Garcia  Berkley  Pflueger  Spiderwire

I have a 703 in the colt series. It wont come close to the champ in sensitivity, but I will say it's a little on the weak side to be a do all rod. I have trouble throwing spinner baits without it feeling over powered. If you are starting with mostly lighter baits it would do fine.

Thanks again all. So i went overboard and picked up a few rods and reels. Will post pics once I get them all set up. Still waiting on a few things arriving.

Dobyns Fury 703SF. Daiwa BG2500. 20lb suffix 832.
Dobyns Champion 703C. Shimano SLX 151. 50lb J Braid x8.
Dobyns Fury 734C. Daiwa Fuego CT. 50lb J Braid x8.

Never used a baitcaster before so that should be interesting...  And never fished for bass so will see how that goes!

Any tips before I hit the water this weekend appreciated.

Cheers

Looks like you made some good choices!  I don't think you will have a problem with those casting reels, those two are probably some of the easiest to learn on from my experience.  Good luck and enjoy your new toys!

Morning all! Got everything set up so as promised, posting a quick pic.

Just need to learn now which rod is best for which application. Topwater, Senkos, crankbaits etc.

Nice spread. I like the color combos. Best of luck breaking in your new outfits, and most of all enjoy!!

Sharp looking combos.  How are you making out with them?

Good thanks! Was catching a lot with the 703c and a Texas rigged rage craw. Also grabbed a refurbished 705dc and have been using that for all my topwater and had some good success throwing a megabass pop max and whopper plopper. Ironically today I switched back to my old ugly stix which I am going to use as a dedicated Ned rig rod and landed my PB 3lber!!
