Cranking Reel Suggestions

Well I decided to help out Gary by purchasing a rod during his sale. It wasn't the best time being I just dropped some decent coin on a sonar, but wanted to help and couldn't turn down the price, so I bought a 705CB.

Naturally, I can't leave the rod unused! which means now I need a reel for it. I'm going to thrown mostly crankbaits/squarebills on it. Several SK 1.5 and 3xd. Keeping mostly in that size. I have a Mach II that works better for larger billed cranks and traps. Straight 14lbs flouro. I'm probably going to go something 5.x:1 ratio. I own mostly Shimano (SLX, SLX XT, Citica), but willing to go elsewhere too. Looking to spend give or take $100. Looking at Diawa Fuego CT or tat CT (found them for 110), maybe Lews Speed Spool LFS, or tournament. I have very little experience with abu, maybe revo x? Something totally different? Of course could go comfortable with another SLX XT, but kind looking to expand a bit.

I dont have any suggestions personally but you can get the Fuego on Amazon for $80ish.

BPS has their Pro Qualifier 2 reel on sale right now for $74.97. It's available in a 5.6:1 ratio with an IPT of 23". It's built on an aluminum frame and if I'm not mistaken is made in the same Doyo factory as the Lew's reels.

IMO it's a very solid reel for the money.

You know, good point. I should go dig back into LMG's big thread of budget comparisons. He had some stand outs in there.

If you can find one reasonably priced the Curado E5 would be a great choice.

Abu Revo X Winch on all of mine, 14lb Sunline FC Sniper. I might move to 12 or 10lb on my deep cranking rod. I just rebuilt a Revo inshore. Its 6:4 but I had to take what I could get. There aren't many of the 1st generation left, especially in the shape it's in. That thing is a tank. Milled aluminium unlike the newer ones.

If you can find one the old Revo Gen 2 and 3 Winch reels are very nice for crankbaits.

No problem. E5 means.. E Series ,the 5 means the Ratio. A search for Curado E5 should do it.
Trouble is they bring close to the same money as when they they were new 10 years or so ago..
Another option would be the E series Citica ,I use them on my Squarebill and Wiggle wart rods.
They are 6:1 and I think that was the only ratio they were available in back then.

All my cranking reels are 5:1 or 6:1. The deeper cranks get used on the 5:1. Squarebills and bandits get used on the 6:1.

What brand doesn't matter as much as speed and spool size. I like at least a 150 size spool for cranks and topwaters.

I was figuring to split the difference with something around 5.6:1 because the seems much more readily available.

So what be your go to for the price on a 705? Tatula CT 150 in 5.6?

Dont get too caught up on the ratio, look at Inches Per Turn....

So what is appropriate IpT? You spent a bunch of time playing with budget minded reels, which one would you go back to?

IPT per individual use, and likes will vary. If you are not deep cranking at lets say 20ft or so, you wont have to worry about big time resistance, and needing that lower IPT. I would say you should be OK with about a 25 to 27 IPT. If you want a reel with good line capacity and casting, take a look into the Quantums, or the Lews. You can get the Quantum Icons for really cheap, and they seem to be a great little reel for the price.

The Shimano SLX150 in 6.3:1 is at 25" IPT and at $99.99 would be hard to beat. I use the Daiwa Tatula 150 because I have used Daiwas for a while but they are $129.99.

Having owned the slx and slx xt I'd be willing to spend the extra few bucks for the xt. Which is why I had the tat on the potential list because I've seen the tat 150 ct for around 110 on sale right now.

I just figured it was worth trying some other brands. I have a daiwa spinner that I dont mind at all. The one lews I have is actually very smooth but not aluminum frame and has those funky knobs are, well, funky.

I'm a fan of the Revo X line too. I have two, latest generation, one winch one high speed. But I can't compare it to three others mentioned.

Daiwa Fuego 6:3:1 for under $80 gets my vote - I have had great success with their 7:1 and 8:1 versions .

Have you been able to fish this setup much yet? If so, what are your thoughts? Just curious as I'm beginning research on a mid-priced cranking/jerkbait set up. It'll be a while before I get it, but so far the Fury 705cb and a Tatula reel seems like a good setup to me.

As a combination I'm pretty impressed. The tat 100 might have been a good option being I dont really bomb casts with a crank. I'm not used to having such a light rod that I can actually load up with such a little bait so I still find myself casting very delicate. The reel is super smooth on the cast. I can hardly tell the spool is spinning. Same on the retrieve. I tend to like centrifugal brakes like on my shimanos more than mag I have used on lews and abu reels, but this one might have changed my mind on that generalization. I havent thrown it a ton nor have I caught any fish on it yet so I'll have to post back when I do but so far very happy.
