My old Mercury Blackmax 150 needs some new wires. The problem is I donno which wires to get. The old wires are SAE J557. I cant find them or a cross reference. Any ideas?

All I could find is that SAE J557 was a standard that spark plug wires were manufactured to prior to 1999.

I dont know any of the specs for what plug wires you need, I did go to Wholesale marine and just looked for Mercury plug wires. They had this set "Sierra 18-28080 Spark Plug Wire Set"

I have no idea if thats the one you need, maybe just take a look at em to see if they are similar. Sorry not more help

Yeah,  who would think it would be so hard to just change your wires..lol.. I'm far from a mechanic, so I wouldnt be able to take a guess at the differences.. I do appreciate you looking them up as well, now I know I'm not crazy, not being able to find them..lol.. maybe someone will have an answer..

You should be able to go to the Mercury Site and put in your Motor Serial Number and get the correct Part Number. Mercury has a Parts Breakdown for all their motors there on-line.

I would then put that Number into a Google Search and see how many sites offer those wires or the replacements.

Big Difference in prices especially on-line. That is how I got mine for my 2004 Opti.
