Hello,

Looking for a rod to throw light umbrella rigs and small swim/glide baits.  Umbrella with heads and plastics weighs in at 2.5 oz on the light end, swims from 0.75-2 oz.  Dobyns website has some reviews for DC 795SB MT, saying "great A-rig/swim rod, etc."  Med-Heavy power.  I'm up in the NY Finger Lakes, so nothing crazy, but there are some big girls around as Old Fart can attest.  Any suggestions?

Thanks.

We have several members here using that particular rod. I hope they will chime in soon.

Aside from that I would say call Dobyns directly and ask to ask with Brodie (pretty sure that' his name). Give him some details of the baits/rigs you will be throwing He fishes a variety of swimbaits/glidebaits and will be able to tell you which rod will work best for you.  ~sun

The 794sb could handle those but my choice is the 795sb mt. That rod is very versatile for a big rod. Large whopper ploppers and rats are also options on it.

I recently purchased the 806 swimbait rod in the Champion series. It's a stout rod. For what you are going to be throwing the 795 will fit the bill just fine.

Thanks Zippy.  Just don't want the rod under powered and have me suffer for it.  Figured you guys would be a huge help.  Used a WP 110 this past summer for first time.  Smallmouth up here eat that bigger one up!  Got me thinking about even bigger lures,  Can the 795 still throw lures on the lighter side?  Some of the floating swimbaits i looked at are about 3/4 oz.

3/4 is definitely on the light side but I'm sure it won't be a problem. The reel will have more to do with that.

No question the 795. I throw the ol' chandelier on it along with a Tranx 300 and 20lb. flouro.
A great rod.

PSU:  there was a post around here (somewhere) a couple days back that linked to a vendor offering discounts on dobyns rods.  I went there.  some great swimbait rods at that site.

along with detailed descriptions of actions and 'rated weights'.  I was looking:  seems there were some great rods for right at $209.

can't find the post.  anyone else have the link?

I got an email from ALF a few days ago:  20% off Dobyns.

Thanks for the input Loomis

I have the Fury 795. It works great for the 2-3oz swimbaits that I throw. The rod is a bit of a broomhandle if you want to throw anything much lighter, but it needs to be that way in order to throw that really heavy stuff.

IF you're wanting to throw some 3/4-1oz stuff, I would just use one of your regular heavy powered rods.

I always lean toward versatility.  good call!

PSUangler,

I bought a DC795SB this past October and I bought it specifically to throw Umbrella rigs.  I usually throw something the size of a Flash Mob Jr., so mine are about midsize as far as A-rigs go.  This rod is Med-heavy,  but handles this size A-rig very well.  I would not go any larger than this,  but have been satisfied so far.

One thing that you need to consider,  the handles on these rods are not cork handles,  they are Neoprene and much easier to hold onto all day without as much of the fatigue that is associated with tossing an A-rig.  Also,  the handles are a little longer making it much easier to handle the heavy weight when casting.

Thanks for all of the advice folks!  I went with the DC 795 SBMT.
Figuring out the reel situation will be next, but I am going to wait until the Spring sales to make that purchase.  That's my wallet's plan anyway.

Good choice. When you figure out the reel situation, check back in and let us know your thoughts on the rod.

I know some of us are Shimano guys,  some Daiwa guys, then us Lew's guys,  but I paired mine with a Lew's Super Duty and it works well with this rod.  Just a thought.

You went with the Wide Spool Super Duty didn't ya?
If that is correct I take it your liking it quite well based on your comment?

The bulk of my reels are various Shimano reels, but I have several Lews, my swimbait reel is currently the Super Duty wide Lews as well. So far so good. I haven't broken in the reel with a fish yet,  though...  :( :(
