Alright, update time. I liked the position of the sonar so it was time hide everything. I purchased the yakattack thru hull wiring kit. I spliced an SAE adapter to the power cable to make quick connect and disconnect for charging. I ran the transducer cable up through its scupper pass thru and then into the hull. It pops out at the unit with the extra tied away at the opening in the back. I ran the power cable down thru the fitting and back to the battery that is stored inside the dry compartment of the hull. I used some high strength velcro to hold the battery in location.

The Garmin looks great. Been looking at a 4CV for my kayak but every time I see the larger models I feel like the 4" is just too small.

If you are willing to spend a little more you can find the echomap plus at a bargain because the echomap UHD came out. I actually got this one for less than the striker 5CV. With this being a 6" I'm not sure how people manage down imaging on the 4".

Picked up a kayak kushion from kushionkompany.com to ease some occasional numbness and lower back pain. In the first trip (about 3 hours) I had no discomfort at all. Very impressed for not being thick and awkward.

I ordered several items to get my anchoring system built. I've really needed something for the wind we've had lately. Will post back with how I plan to handle it when it all arrives, which could be a while with how some things are shipping.

As promised. Its anchor time. 3 part build here. Part 1 was the cleat. I used a yakattack medium heavy track system. I purchased the add on backing plate for extra support being the anchor will be tied off to it. I used the yakattack mini cleat. I liked this route because it's easy to relocate and you can never have too many gear tracks in a kayak. Part 2 is the anchor trolley. I did not buy the HD version with back support because they would have been a massive pain to install. It shouldnt have weight pulling on it being it will tie off to the cleat. Trolley makes positioning yourself so much easier to cast to your area if interest despite wind or current. Part 3 is the anchor. 3.5 poind yakgear folding grappling anchor. 550 paracord shackled to the bottom for recovery if hung up. The nifty part is the line management. That is a heavy duty chalk line. It came with 100ft nylon cord. I pulled the 6 screws go disassemble, enlarged all the holes that the cord passes through (two I'm the spool, one in the guide and one in the cover) and strung 50ft of paracord in it. I bought the reel for $20 at lowes. The gearing isnt strong enough to crank the anchor up, but I can quickly pull it by hand, tie off to the cleat and then manage the slack safely. Nothing more dangerous on a boat than scattered line. I carry a knife on my life jacket too if I need to quick release. I used a simple carabiner to attach the anchor line to the trolley so I can quickly remove for storage and such without removing line from anchor.

What type and size of batteries are you guys using to power the FF?

apiazza

Right now I'm just running a basic 12v 7Ah SLA battery. My garmin is a bit high on draw for that battery and probably need a slightly bigger one. But it does the job for a day of fishing.

I bought a 12V 8ah battery at Bass Pro for $20. I have the Garmin Striker 4 CV. I have only used it for about 5-6 hours but it hasn't died. Judging by how long it takes my Battery Tender to recharge it, I don't think it's even remotely close to going dead. I've had the quickdraw mapping recording, along with a Clearvu and regular sonar split screen going basically the whole time.

apiazza

My echomap showed 12.1v after 3 or so hours of fishing. In addition to the larger screen it's also transmitting wifi and bluetooth the whole time. Garmin reports it at 1Ah draw so it could run 7ish hours until dead, but will likely get bad sonar readings before that point.

I don't think I've seen mine drop below 12.3 yet. But I didn't pay much attention to it because I never looked to see what that meant.

That's pretty good. A fully charged 12v battery is usually around 12.6v. A discharged is usually around 11.8v.

That should do the trick to hold you steady in the wind so you can fish your spot.  8)

Ya know, for the first time in a while I'm not actually sure what that is. Time to buy a new yak and start over!

What is the weight and size of these and where did you find it?

The Wife and I are seriously looking at getting each a Kayak and I have 2 Units not being used and would like to put one on each.

Just wondering how much room the take up and how heavy they are.

Here is an example of one for reference... https://www.amazon.com/Mighty-Max-Battery-ML9-12-Rechargeable/dp/B00K8V2Y8W/ref=sr_1_5?crid=LDPNFZYRHLUS&dchild=1&keywords=9ah+12v+battery&qid=1587567648&sprefix=9ah%2Caps%2C169&sr=8-5

if you want do decrease weight and size you can run a lithium battery. That size would run about $100.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I have. All of the no-name cheap batteries are probably made in the same factory in China. They should all be similar.

That's the truth. Not to hijack the thread, I used to work for a distributor in the motorcycle industry. I have a lot of insight into private labels, manufacturing, etc. With batteries, the cheap ones are just fine. They will not last quite as long as a main name brand, but usually worth it for the price difference. You'll get more lemons with a cheap brand, but as long as you have customer service taking care of you, you should be fine.
