I throw mostly 3/8th oz.  - 1/2 oz. chatterbaits and am interested in opinions in the best Dobyns casting rod for chatterbaits ? *I'm thinking either a 733c or 734c with #15 lb. InvizX FC line would be in the ball park as well as possibly a Dobyns composite / glass  rod ? There may be a MH / Moderate action graphite rod I may have missed as well . Lastly , while I use braid in other applications ,  I believe a slight delay between rod and line (FC or co-poly , mono mainline) has enough stretch to allow a bass to better  take the chatterbait good ... Your thoughts on the best Dobyns rod and line set up that works best with chatterbaits for you ?

Smallie_Stalker

I think you will find most people will recommend the DC 735CB Glass (actually a glass/graphite composite) for those weights. It seems to be the Dobyns rod of choice among the serious "Chatterbaiters" here at UB.

As for a pure graphite rod the Fury 705 CB is a MH / Moderate rod. Since chatterbaits are a moving presentation you may not need the extra sensitivity of a higher priced rod.

Hope that helps.

Most are probably going to recommend the DC735CB-Glass, but I'm not a glass rod fan. So I'm going to recommend the SA734 or SA735.

What you need to ask yourself if do you prefer a slower, crankbait style rod for chatterbaits, or do you prefer a little faster rod?

I use a Dobyns Savvy 733 or 734 in most cases. Im pretty sure the Sierra series same lengths and powers would be very similar. I throw strait braid 30 or 40lb. It works for me as I like to feel everything and braid gives me the feedback while the excellent tip of the rods has no problem letting the bait get sucked in. I also fish braid because when I throw chatterbaits its in and around lily pads that will eat 15lb line for a snack. If you are fishing pretty clear water or light grass I can see using the lighter line.

I have a Fury 733C loaded with 30 lb. braid.. It's good up to a 3/8 oz. chatterbait with trailer but if I try and throw a 1/2 oz. with a trailer on that rod I feel like the bait is overpowering it. I'm gonna be looking to buy a 4 or 5 power rod before spring for stuff like this.

For 1/2 oz with a trailer the 736cb glass is the best.
If you need cheaper then the Sierra 735 is a great option.

I bought a mislabeled DC 736 CB Glass (its a 735) and it's an awesome chatterbait rod, almost exclusively a rod for chatterbait or other shakey blade bait.

I have a new SA734 I have not used yet for chatterbaits - what line for 3/8th oz. chatterbaits would you use with a SA734 ?

14-17lb fluorocarbon for sparser weeds, 40-50lb braid if I'm ripping it through some super heavy vegetation.

Zippy, I'm curious as to your thoughts on why a 6 power would be better than a 5 power in that rod for a 1/2 oz. bait.

I'll let Zippy make his own comment, but one thing to keep in mind when using a swim jig or chatterbait is that even though the jig itself may only be a 1/2oz, a 3.8" Keitech is around 3/8oz in weight by itself. So when paired together, you're at almost an ounce of weight, so having a heavier power rod is much more ideal for making those long casts without over straining the rod.

Man, this board is awesome. I am also trying to decide between the 735 glass and 736 glass for a chatterbait rod. I will use mostly 3/8 chatterbaits (occasional 1/2) but almost always use a trailer. Does that send me to a 736?

zippyduck

Casting a chatterbait with a trailer puts a lot of load on the rod. With the glass tip it is easy to throw all sizes with a 736cb glass. The extra power on a long cast also makes hookups more secure.

If you were pitching the 735cb glass is a better option. Not as much load on the rod to pitch and less line pickup on the hookset.

Both will do the job.

So here are other things to think of.
If you were to use it for cranks also then you can narrow down the choice even better.
Cranks like bandits and other small cranks work great on the 735cb glass.
Cranks like big wakes, Super deep divers, and other hard pulling baits work a lot better on the 736cb glass

Thank you zip. I have always used finesse stuff on my clear local lake and have an arsenal of spinning rods. I am just getting started with the crankbaits and have gotten a couple of the 705 Glass for lipless and mid-divers. I even got a fury 705CB that I want to use for either smaller spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. Thoughts? I plan to get them all wet this weekend. I had targeted the 765 glass and/or the 805 for the deeper stuff. Maybe the 736 glass will be able to pull some double duty for me...at east until the bait monkey makes an appearance.   :)

zippyduck

The 805 is a great deep rod. Long casts and great feel  for a cranking rod.

The 736cb glass is more versatile than the other two.

I use a Sa734c for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits.

The 705cb will work for them and would work great for lipless.

You can ask ten people this question and you will get six different opinions.  The first thing that you need to do is to figure out what your price point is going to be looking at so that you know which line of rods you will have to pick from.  Once you determine that,  you will narrow your choices down dramatically.

Here is my two cents worth:

My choice would be different from all that have responded so far.  I would choose a Champion DC 684c.
It is a heavy action rod with a fast tip so you should have no trouble pulling a volkswagen out of the grass with it.  This rod is shorter and will cast around docks and under trees with better control than a longer rod,  plus the rod is much lighter.  This rod is actually designed for similar baits including chatterbaits.  With that said,  if you are fishing wide open water,  the longer rod would improve casting distance.

Thanks guys. I hope to try the 705 glass tomorrow. I put a tournament mb on it and plant to try DLNs, lipless, squarebills, and maybe even jerks. I want to see what feels in the zone. I should heed the advice about the 684. We fish more blowdowns, docks, and riprap than anything. The shorter rod would likely help my accuracy? I'm looking at something for a chatterbait next, but I could see using a 684 champion a lot.

Between a DC 734 CH, FR 733 C, SA 703 C, and DC 705 CB Glass.... Which would you choose for learning on a Chatterbait?  Very little grass in my area.  I was leaning towards the 734 CH, but thought I'd ask.

Where are you throwing it if not in grass?
If you are throwing in to wood a shorter stouter rod will work better. Say a 705c to get them out of the cover faster. And to make more accurate casts.
If around riprap then a 735cb glass is the way to go. It is my bladed bait rod.
I would not use a 3 power, as a chatterbait is usually thrown around cover.

There's lots of "right" rods for 3/8 and 1/2oz Chatterbaits. This is a little tough to answer because so many guys want a different rod for this technique. I personally fish 2 models. I fish a 735C Champ and a 736 CB Glass. I like a little more power than most anglers. But here is a list of top sellers for Chatterbaits and the list is long.

All 733C and 734C models in all series. The 734C getting the nod over the 733C, but both are extremely popular. The 735C Sierra, 735 CB Glass and 736 CB Glass. The Champ 735C which is X-fast action making it faster than Sierra. We also sell a fair amount of 703 and 704C rods in all series.  All these mentioned can work. You'll need to plat around until you find what fits you best. Also, you using braid? Many guys will go with a lighter action rod with braid. I don't myself and I fish a lot of braid. Again, it depends on the angler's likes. Confused, buy one of each and test :):) Joking of course. Thanks for the question.
