Polymer Vs. Carbon rods

While picking out my rod for my spinning setup I though of this question. What makes a carbon rod superior to a polymer rod or vice versa? I know polymer rods such as uglystik are extremely durable but inferior? And carbon rods are supposedly superior but more brittle? Thanks for the responses I'm still trying to learn about the gear I'll be using and what I'll be using it for. Thanks!

Neither is superior to the other.

Apply each to its niche and you have a good rod.

Carbon or graphite rods are more sensitive as there is more rigidity in them. But that rigidity also gives the edge to fish throwing hooks. Also the breakage issue is always there.

Now a glass rod is going to help throw casts a mile and keep fish pinned better on treble hooks. The sensitivity is pretty much thrown out the window but also the fish doesn't feel you either as much.

Now we have new rods that have both and are a great compromise. There is also Graphite rods built with a moderate action that is a great option for moving baits.

A Graphite rod is excellent for jigs, t-rigs, c-rigs, and other bottom contact baits.

A glass rod is really good for cranks, topwater, and other treble hook baits.

There are exceptions to many of these guidelines though.

A frog must be thrown on a heavy power fast action graphite rod. To pull them out of the grass.

A spook and jerkbait is better with a graphite rod due to making the action with the rod.

SSSSHHHH I own three ugly sticks.

Two are my wifes and one is in my regular rotation for smallies. It is a 6'6" med power that I throw a 1/6 oz. roostertail on and I wouldn't use any other rod for it.

Ah thank you! I believe dobyns are graphite correct? Also it doesnt seem I'm getting many replays on my spinning rod thread so what would you reccomend for me? I'm going to be using to mostly for wackys/dropshots/panfish. But I wont be doing much fishing for about a month earlier today I cut off a significant amount of my finger superglued it and then went on to screw it up in my football game... dumb but your only in highschool once right

Dobyns has Graphite and graphite/glass combos.

Their cb glass rods are for cranking and a few other techniques like chatterbaits and topwaters.

Yes you are only in high school once but try to make it out alive.

We all did dumb stuff at that age. So who was the girl you were trying to impress?

Ok onto the wacky, dropshot, panfish rod. I would want a med action graphite rod with a fast tip. Not an extra fast though. I would get as long of a rod as you can carry and use. A 7 footer is a good size.

Now knowing your cash level is low, I would look at Berkley lightning rods or BPS rods as they are well built and excellent for the money.
Dobyns also has the colt series for $79.99 but that is much higher than the other two options.

Now a reel is easier and cheaper. Look at reels in the $30-$40 range. Make sure there are no plastic parts other than the handle knob.
Wind the reel in retrieve mode then stop and go back. there should be no play in the handle.
Next grab the spool and spin it by hand and feel for any jerkiness in the drag.
You may go through a few reels but find one that matches this and you should have a good one for a few years depending on how much you use it.

Ah just saw this, for the rod so - graphite fast action medium rod 7'1. The dobyns 702SF and 703SF fit that but the 702 is med/light and can handle less weight. So I think I'll go 703SF and im going to call dobyns about their refurbs so I can maybe get a deal on one if you think it's a good idea? And like you saw in my spinning setup thread I'm willing to spend a bit more then 40~ but if I can find one that fits the bill for that I mean hey who doesnt like saving money

. And about the finger no, no girl lol. Finally my trainer made me go to an urgent care and they were like "yep people cut the tips of their fingers off all the time" they just had to cauterize it. Thanks!

Yes, Order a refurb if you can. they go over them with a fine tooth comb. If they say it is good then its golden.

Awesome it's good to have that confirmation. Also uve been looking at those Berkley lightning rods too they're pretty tempting too not gonna lie.

I have a couple of the Berkley rods and they are decent for the price. I seen a few places have them on sale for labor day for under $30

So I've been looking at the Berkeley lighting rods and which one would you reccomend? I was thinking something comparable to the dobyns 703SF in length/action. Also that dobyns glass rod you recently did a review on, how much was it I dont be live theres one in the fury series correct? Thanks.

The downside to a 2 piece is sensitivity. It will not be that much of a difference. The action and power I would pick is a 7' med/ fast.
It will handle light topwaters, senkos. shakey heads, and dropshots.

Alright I think I'll go with the 2 piece then and perfect that's exactly what I was thinking. Also I forgot to attach the picture here it is. Its 7" medium fast action 2 piece and on sale for $30 on amazon

The Dc735cb glass is in the Champion series. I got a deal on it a while ago. They retail at $239.99. I'm Thinking a little out of you range yet.
They also have a Dc705cb glass that is my next purchase.
