HARD lesson learned

Hey guys so I just learned a very valuable and expensive lesson I cant afford to. I was throwing a texas rig just like I always do and my brother went directly to the right of me and instead of being a normal human being and moving I decided to cast overhead... long story short I snapped my rod. I know theres a limited lifetime warranty for my fury series rod. $50 replacement fee and shipping. Well I wont do that again. That goes out of my spinning rod fund I'm saving for. Feel free to lay down any advice. Thanks.

No advice needed... you said it yourself. Lesson learned. Sometimes that's the best way to learn because I guarantee you, you won't do that again. Heck, I'm a grown man, and messing up is the best way I still learn even though it can be costly at times.

Good news however, Dobyns has a great replacement policy and you will be fishing again in no time.

Thanks Bassinlou I appreciate it. I just did the "find a dobyns dealer near you" to get around S+H cost and unless I want to drive to Canada (23mi) or spend more money on gas driving 90mi then I have to spend it. What would you ship it in? Thanks.

When I have shipped broken rods in the past, I have used rod shipping tubes that I have kept over the years or... buy a pvc tube from the hardware store and ship it in that.

just a dumb question: side arm or overhead, if you don't over-power t he rods' load rating, should it snap just due to angle of rod at cast?

My guess is as good as yours, I had a 3/8 oz bullet weight a worm hook and senko on there for my texas rig so it couldn't have weighed more then 1/2-5/8oz in all and the rod is rated for 1/4-11/4oz so yeah it must have just been the trajectory and speed I was casting it.

Alright so I grabbed a 6ft 3" piece of PVC from my backyard and sealed up the ends with cardboard and gorilla tape. Then I read two very contradicting things on the dobyns warranty page. According to this screenshot (please read underlined) do I send the complete damaged rod or the 6" logo? Thanks

I'm pretty sure you just ship the logo section. Call the shop in the morning to be 100% sure though

I believe if it's determined to have happened due to a defect, they will replace it and you only pay shipping I think. You have to send them the whole rod to determine that though, so you need the tube to ship it.

If you are doing the "no hassle, no questions asked" warranty replacement, you just cut the logo part of the rod off and send it in a padded envelope. That's what I did with my Sierra rod I broke on the first day I used it. It was my fault though, so I just cut the logo part and sent it in with a check. Got it replaced in less than a week.

Jacob, if you go to the Dobys store site you can purchase a return label that can save you some money on the shipping charges.

Nah I'm not gonna go through the hassle it was my fault and working all good until I decided to sling it over my head. All in all it was my mistake and responsibility but I mean it's not so bad, it's not another $120 and I made $90 yesterday got up at 5 to go do yard work then got home at 4 so I could go fishing. Did you ship it with money and proof of purchase and they shipped the rod back to your address? Thanks.

Yes, I basically cut the handle off, then cut it just above the logo. Then stuck it into a padded envelope and sent a copy of the receipt and a check for the new replacement rod. If you go to the Dobyns website and click warranty, it will have a list of what they want you to send. I think there is a little form to fill out as well.

Alright so update, I called them this morning and confirmed everything. I drove down the road picked up a few padded shipping envalopes because in the warranty they stress "PADDED SHIPPING ENVALOPE" grabbed a sawzal cut the piece off, put the piece and a $50 bill in the envalope. Now I just need my receipt (gotta get that from my dad) and how do I pay for return shipping? It says in the warranty shipping should be about $20 do I put that in there too? Thanks.

I sent a check for $80, so I believe that was $60 for the replacement rod and $20 for the shipping, so I would say you need to send the whole amount to get it. I wouldn't send cash. Use a check, money order, cashiers check, anything but cash....

You can always call the folks at Dobyns and they will walk you through the process.

Yeah I called them the other day and they were in quite the hurry to get me off the phone they just kept saying "read the warranty" "all the information is in the warranty" and yet I have a lot of confusion. Also so my parents dont want me to use the ups Express padded envalope I picked up because it would cost more to ship. So I did this will it work? The rod piece wrapped in bubble wrap taped up in this grey shipping bag. Thanks.

Hey everyone I wanted to let you know finally the replacement came in today and I was wondering if I should keep the rest of the rod? I mean I'm going to keep the handle as a cool reminder of what not to do but is there anything I could use the excess for? Fuji guides? I'm not sure and just to humor myself I took a few pics of the breakage just to see what you guys think of it. Thanks.

If it were me, I would strip off all the guides and keep them. Never know in the future when you might snap off or damage one guide, and now you have spares, especially the tip guide.

Just take a lighter / flame and apply the heat to the thread wraps where it holds the guide to the rod blank and once the glue softens up, just pull out the guide. Use gloves of pliers so not to burn your hands, but be careful not to damage the guide if you use pliers.
