Decided to give this reel a shot since I was able to get it for half of what it retails for. Aluminum frame, brass gears, carbon fiber handle, 11 bearings, ACS braking system. Its a Banax reel, but well equipped for the price. Feels smooth while turning the handle. The spool itself is extremely light, and well ported. I got the 7.0:1 ratio, which is 29 IPT. So not killer fast, but right around the area I like. Rubber cork knobs feel good in the hand, and arent too bulky. Overall finish is nice, only a few minor imperfections. For what i paid for the reel, Im not gonna be too picky. Lets see how it does on the water this weekend. Its getting spooled with 30lb braid, and I want to see how versatile this thing can be.

Looking forward to your review. Never was a fan of Quantum and how they put their stuff together. But to be honest, I haven't torn into anything of theirs in quite a while. They got a very bad rep around here with the smoke and lost all their customers...

Spooled it up with some 30lb Spectra. Gonna see how it does casting a 1/8oz weight and a soft plastic.

It's a nice looking reel.
I haven't used quantum since I was a kid. Of course that was spinning gear.

I bought a quantum spinning reel back in the 90s, can't remember the name of it. It had a wooden knob on the handle, and it was their high end at the time. Was the first time I spent what I considered real money on gear, paired it with a Shimano convergence rod. I had that reel for a while, it performed well. Nothing since then, as I bought a Stradic 5 years after that and never looked back. Can't really afford a new Stradic, so I picked up a Nasci and am very happy with it.

Popped the reel open to verify main gear material. Its aluminum.

I got to fish this reel yesterday while out at Lox. One things about this reel, it's a caster for sure. Even into ahead wind, the brakes are easy to use, and easy to adjust being the adjuster is all externally controlled. Clutch engagement is solid, and retrieve is smooth. I could feel the Palm plate move a hair every once in awhile. Not a deal breaker, but just a small refinement issue. The spool being light and well ported allowed me to throw some light weight with ease.

I would rate this reel in the 7 to 8 out off 10 range. Now, if I would have paid full MSRP, I would be disappointed in the overall picture. The reel isn't worth the $150 that they want, but for what I paid, I can't complain one bit. The reel is very light, and very capable. An aluminum frame, carbon fiber handle, cork knobs, clicking drag and spool tension adjustment, and light weight components make this a fun reel to use.

The clutch cam is black, is is plastic? I would assume so... Quantum used a lot of pot metal clutch cams in the past and they would break easily. Since the clutch arm/plate is metal and screwed to the clutch cam as separate pieces, I'm thinking this problem has been fixed.

Yes, plastic

The whole mechanism looks like it's much improved and will last  ~c~ ~c~

Yes, its built way better. And, a dual bearing supported pinion gear to boot!

I have a Quantum Icon PT which is a step below the Vapor. It's been a solid reel for the Money for the last couple years. That one should be a good reel for you. The braking system was vastly improved over the older 4 position ones on the older Kinetics and Smokes.

I still have several AC500s, they're relegated to back up and will probably make the Church Garage sale this year. I don't like not being able to order parts after 3 or 4 years old.
