Holeshot no bueno

I run a Yamaha 200 HPDI with a 25P three blade that came with the motor. Have had zero issues for years until I added 2 Talons. Now my holeshot SUCKS. Is this an issue that lowering my motor a little will solve or do I need a different pitch or 4 blade prop? With no water in livewells holeshot is "decent". With wells full I can barely plane out. I'm all ears. Forgot to mention, also had appox 50 gals of fuel in tanks as well.

The Talons have added a little more weight but the biggest thing they've added is drag. Dropping to a 24P 4 blade will help. If your prop has any plugged PVS vents, you may want to try removing plugs one at a time.

There's no plugged vents. Has 3 and all are open. So I need to search for a 24P 4 blade that'll fit my Yamaha? Any suggestions on brand or source?

If you have a jackplate and depending on what your current prop shaft to pad height is now, you could try raising it a little to see if that will buy you enough slippage to get spun up. Be careful, watch your water pressure. Too high you'll blow out.

Dropping down 1" in pitch with the same make and model prop should improve your hole shot. My personal preference is a 4 blade and if I were in your position I'd drop to a 24P 4 blade.

A 4 blade gives you a better bite on the water which translates to more control rough water and better handling on the bends and curves.

Generally when you go from a 3 blade to a 4 you'll want to drop a pitch anyway, otherwise it will be harder to turn than the 3 blade. Most folks shy away from 4 blades because dropping a pitch will drop their speed by maybe 2 mph.

Thanks for the info. I'm not a speed freak. I'd much rather my boat jump out of the hole and handle better in the turns than break a speed record. I'll be stopping by PowerTech tomorrow to see what they can do for me.

get a CB foil......looks good and my ZX200 would plan in about 30 ft. at 20 mph....just saying...

Princeton Man, when I gave my boat specs to the fella at PowerTech he recommended a 23P 4 blade. That sound right or too big of a drop in pitch?

It could very well be. He certainly should know his props. I usually base my pitch numbers on Rakers and OMC props because I know them. Two different brands of Like Raker and Powertech while being the same pitch can perform very differently. You want to be able to reach your max RPM without exceeding it. If you can easily go beyond your motor's max rpm, up the pitch.

He should allow you to return it for a higher pitch if needed as long as it's not damaged.

Yes sir, he will. I have 30 days to run it and tune it with the pvs plugs and if its not working I can swap.

Swede, prop showed up this evening. Keeping my fingers crossed that I can get off work on time tomorrow. If so, I plan to get her installed and haul ass to the lake to start testing. I'll post the results. She sure is purty. Can't wait to see how it comes out of the hole with it.

Appears the 23P was too much of a drop in pitch. My motor's listed max is 5500 rpm, the 23 is turning 6000 at WOT and I lost 6 mph on the top end. That's a few more than I anticipated losing.

Wow!

You usually only need to drop 1" in pitch when going to a four blade. I thought since your prop man recommended the drop to a 23 that maybe it had some additional cup or something. It sounds like a 24P is in order.

Yes sir, I questioned him about dropping 2". I thought that was excessive but he said since I was having trouble planing out with a load he would go with 23. Should've gone with my gut I guess. It hit 6 grand around 3/4 throttle.

24P 4 blade from Powertech solved all the issues. Still have a little tweaking to do with motor height but that's it. Thanks for the input and help guys.
