I live within 10 minutes walking of Lake Roland/Robert E Lee Park and have had decent success catching bass/crappies out of there. Does anyone else/ has anyone else fished there?

i was born in hampden and still only live 20-30 minutes away and it just occured to me that the thought has never crossed my mind to try to fish lake roland. I think im going to give it a shot.

Wasn't there a boat ramp at the lake by the dam, if so how big of a boat can it handle?

fishmagnet

i am pretty sure there is not a ramp , but i have seen guys carry small jon boats down there.

I used to fish there alot.  Lots of little crappies in there.  I f I remember I think most of them are stunted because of the numbers of them in there.  Also have scene trout caught out of there.

I looked into it once and believe the permit for a boat was around $100.

i used to fish lake roland and catch alot of bass but last year around fall of 2008 i went one morning to fish and the pump in the gate house broke and all the water drained out completely. i came back like everyday that week and it was empty. then one day the city finally fixed the pump which keeps the water in there and the water is back up.  i really dont think any of the fish would have survived that unless they found a small little pool of water to live in during that week. i didnt see any water at all. i was even able to walk to a spot of mine at an underwater fallen tree and collect a rapala lure of mine i broke off a month earlier. if anyone has been there lately and actually caught fish i would like to know. also that rapala xrap sureset still has sharp hooks and works like it did when i bought it even after sitting underwater for a whole month. thats probally why they cost 8 dollars a piece.

Thats funny, Ive been fishing from the shore of loch raven before and lost a lure on a tree, it was a brand new lure i had bought that morning i was pissed. So i decided to wade out to get the lure. Bad idea i wasn't wearing waders or anything so i was freezing for the rest of the day but i got my lure back damnit.

I was fishing last spring and a friend of mine got snagged and broke a lucky craft off and later i got snagged on the same thing and i somehow reeled it in and it was a cast net that someone lost in the water and it had probably 50 baits stuck on it. Some good crankbaits too  ;D

old thread - i know - but i found it while looking for some Lake Roland info myself ... for what it is worth, i walked in the backside of Lake Roland on 10/16/11 and caught an 8" largemouth on my second cast.  Caught it on a Bomber foxy shad ...  ~fff ~cf

You can drop in in a small boat but you need a permit from baltimore city and it cost 100.00 bucks my buddy has a permit and we fish it. My biggest fish is a 3lb.

I went by there this morning with my kayak and the sign said No Boating. The sign was at the parking lot just above the dam. So what's the story?

jlifton

I contacted Baltimore County about using a boat on Lake Roland. Here's the response: ~gf

Dear Mr. Lifton,

I apologize for any inconvenience caused by the inaccurate signage at the park as it relates to boating. The information on the website is accurate. Canoeing and kayaking is permitted at your own risk at Robert E. Lee Park. Boaters must wear a life jacket. We are currently in the process of developing new, accurate signage for the park.

Sincerely,

We saw a guy catch a HUGE carp here this evening.  I was there with my 4 year old son - we got a small smallmouth on a wooly bugger spinner.  Beautiful evening.

lake roland has potential if your patient and don't mind covering alot of ground walking to different areas to find bass. I primarily fish carp if im at roland at the old boat dock. I use doughballs (usually strawberry koolaid enhanced dough).

I read a post about someone catching brown trout out of the lake, if you drive up falls road about 3 miles till you get to the brooklandville vol. fire dept. and park your car and walk up the stream (jones falls) you will find heaps of unadulterated brown trout. The abundance is quite surprising since the stream actually cuts underneath 695. this being said the presence of brown trout in lake roland is not shocking but definitely incredibly cool  ~gf

My personal best catches at Lake roland are; a month ago i caught a 15lb carp. About 6 years ago i would frequently bass fish and caught some nice 2 pounders around the lake. over all id give this lake a 2 1/2 star rating out of 5.

Spent this past Sunday at Lake Roland. This was only my second time fishing there after losing a $10 swimbait on the bottom near the dam. Oops. Live and learn I guess!

Anyways, this time around I hiked around the trail that goes around the lake and eventually crosses the light rail bridge. My successful spots: There's a very small opening from the shore about 50 yards from the bridge if you're hiking counter clock-wise. I only stopped here because I saw some nice looking bass gathered around a tree only a few yards from shore. I tossed my Rapala Shad Rap 07 with Perch coloring and let it sit on the top of the water, giving it a little bit of action every 15 seconds or so. The big 'uns didn't seem too interested but as I was reeling in, only about a yard from shore a nice 2 pound LB grabbed it and gave a strong albeit short fight.

After a few more casts and no action I moved on. I hiked almost all the way around because by then I had tried numerous other spots to no avail and the sun was starting to set. I settled in again near the dam but this time on the side with the rock covered hill. I had two rods with me, one set up with a nightcrawler and a bobber and my trusty Shad Rap on the other. Wouldn't you know it...I hooked up on both set-ups and caught similar 2 pounders to end the day.

This is a tricky lake to fish from shore for sure. I saw many kayakers out on the water who probably had a better day than me but I will definitely be back to try those spots and others again. There were folks fishing from other decent-looking shore locations. If you see me there say hi, I'll be the dude in the grey Weezer hat with the =w= on it!

My only question is, where is this "old boat dock" someone mentioned in an earlier post?
