Poof! And just like that, they're gone...

Exact same conditions today at the LOZ, maybe a little windier. But my shad fish vamoosed overnight. The deeper shad are almost all gone, and the ones that I did find were at 18-20 feet, and close to the bottom with no game fish in sight. I spent FOUR HOURS graphing and looking with no luck. The one group of baitfish that did match what I had yesterday was on a main lake point, in 10-15 feet of water. The larger hooks underneath them ended up being WALLEYE. And not big 'eyes, either.

Finally went shallow and just started fishin'. I left the trolling motor down for almost three hours and just fished. And I caught probably thirty bass, from dink Kentuckies to one that would not quite go four pounds. Caught around seven keepers, mostly just CHUNKY 15 and 16 inch bass. They're definitely hurting those shad, spitting them up all the way to the boat.

They were missing the topwaters- I caught equal numbers burning a crankbait and a spinnerbait on docks, and the fish were everywhere- in front, on the sides and on the backs. No bites on the banks. Yet.

Tomorrow I'm going to my old stomping grounds, the water supply lake for my hometown. It gets hammered hard, but I haven't been there for a while. I'm hoping for the best topwater and FROG day of the year in the milfoil and pads.

Old Fishermen never die, their rods just go limp.
