Sadly I don't know the answer to the first question. I am still using the original tail, as I have yet to get a bite on the rat. :-/

But according to some videos I watched they designed it so you could use soft plastics. All you'd need is some toothpicks and a worm. The toothpick keeps the worm in.
I would go with a finesse worm, or a zoom shakey head worm, or a swamp crawler or something like that should work as long as it fits.

Thanks, what size rat are you using? I'm considering a small one for some local ponds just to throw something new at them. Hopefully it will be worth the money

I'm using the smallest one. I've thrown it at the local park on different days for a total of maybe 5 -6hours. Out in the Everglades a few times as well. I haven't put a crazy amount of time into it but I have a hard time sticking with a lure that's not producing within 30 min. I switch around a lot till I find whats working.
Best I've had is a school of 3lbers chase it all the way to the bank.

Anyway not saying any of this to discourage anyone from buying it. The lure swims fantastic and i just can't believe I haven't caught anything on it. Some lures just don't seem to work for me like they work for other people. Whopper Plopper is a good example of that.

Just so you know the smallest one dives to about half a foot maybe a little more depending on line you use. You have to reel it super slow to keep it waking as intended and rod tip up.
My understanding is the other sizes float better. The small one just doesn't have enough body mass to keep it up.

It might work for you. Good luck with it. I know I'll keep throwing it from time to time till I catch something and hopefully improve my confidence.

Hopefully someone else here has a better answer to your question than I do lol.

it's not the size of the rat in the pond, it's the size of the fight in the bass.

I prefer the full size rat.  Love the brown rat color.  so far, haven't been able to get one over 5 to the boat, but have had bigger MUCH bigger on.  typically works best during early, low light conditions.  have also had a few on during night time.

do not fear the big rat!  I could tell you a fish story about the one that got away.  She still makes me smile and keep on tossing the big rat.

I do throw this on braid and an 8 foot heavy action rod

I think one of my big issues is I've been throwing it in crystal clear water fishing from the bank of a public park that is highly pressured.
Big bass live there but they aren't seen or caught often.
If none of the fish are going for the small rat I can't imagine them going for the big one.

1-2 pounders attack with regularity.

I do feel there's an advantage to be able to cover water.  so being a boat angler probably is a big help
