I have a bunch of knives that just are not as sharp as they should be.  I'm looking for a good knife sharpener that is not too expensive, but will put a razors edge on a bunch of old hunting knives.  Suggestions appreciated!  :help:

Patience is about the cheapest and best knife sharpener I've ever found. I have a couple different Smith's sharpening and honing stone sets. The stone set is pretty old, I think it was still made here in America when I bought it. The honing set is a bit newer and probably Chinese. Neither set cost more than $30 dollars. Pay attention to what you're doing, take your time, and you should be able to shave with your knives.

For somethin' quick to put an edge on 'em. Those little V notch ceramic sharpeners work pretty darn good and you can get them from $10 down to about $3.

Work Sharp will do the trick and it is foolproof.... well I am sure there is a fool out there who could screw it up, but not any of us. I got it a few years back and it still is sharpening the knives I am dulling.

I have the same one, works well and so simple to use.

Thanks guys for the input.  I need something simple and bullet proof.  I have little experience sharping blades.  Thanks again.

Two suggestions,

1. The WorkSharp. Works well but one word of caution, it is possible to over bevel the edge. Dont use too much pressure and you should be fine.

2. The Harbor Freight 1"x30" belt sander or for significantly more money the Baldor 1"x42".

You can get belts, a leather strop and compound from these people,

Lastly, watch Jay Neilsons (Yes, the Forged in Fire guy) you tube video for an excellent and easy tutorial using the Baldor type machine and Pops supplies,

I've tried many ways for sharpening and once I learned the Jay Neilson technique, it's all I use any more. In fact, I should put my Work Sharp up for sale.

I have a Work Sharp and like it, but something that I like for putting a fine, sharp edge on a knife is my old Sharp Maker by Spyderco.

I'm a fan of a medium diamond hone and a set of Smiths sharpening sticks, 4 or 5 minutes while I'm watching tv and a dull knife becomes a shaving instrument.

My knives are special to me. I sharpen them only with an oil stone. They get incredibly sharp with a little effort. It's old school today but has been used for centuries.

It's the way my Dad taught me, I still have several Arkansa and India stones and occasionally break them out to keep my hand in. You're right, it's old school and works great.

Rodney, I am very surprised by your answer.  I would have bet for sure that you would make a claim that you got your sharpening equipment from Bass Pro Shops.
