What flipping hooks do you use?

I bought some owner flipping hooks and 50 lb. braid is coming out of the eye after tying a snell knot.
Is there a better hook to use with this set up?

I use the Mustad Denny Brauer Grip-Pin Max Flippin hooks. The eye is sealed. I use the snell knot too and have never had this problem with these hooks.

I use the Owner Jungle Flipping Hook with the snell knot with no problems. Its my favorite hook, if I am not using a jig most likely I'm tossing the Jungle hook with some plastic on it.

I'm not sure how its coming out of the eye on you unless you just got a bad package. I use 50lb and 65lb braid all the time and have yet to have this issue.

I've played with a lot of hooks recently and can give a personal take. Please keep in mind that I fish nothing less than 50-pound braid and in some of the thickest cover available.

I have been a trokar user since they came out and been very happy. Lately, I've been straightening the hooks. I've also never like that I couldn't resharpen a Trokar hook, the three sides make it virtually impossible to get it back to stick sharp once it dulls. So I've been on the hunt.

Let me say up front I've never liked owners cutter point. It's a great idea to get into the meat of a bass but during a long strong fight, it will also cut a bigger hole. For that reason, I've never used the Flipping version. For all I know it doesn't even have the cutter point. Also, the cutter point is impossible to resharpen, so when it's dull it's done.

I've recently tried Gammy's Heavy Cover hook and it's a brute. The first package I had trouble with the bait keeper sliding down. So I ruled them out. However, I have a buddy that is on the Gammy Staff and he gave me some more and encouraged me to continue my hunt for a new hook. I must say I've not had any more issues with the bait keeper. So I must have got a bad package. The hook is a brute, very thick. If you bend this hook, you have a hookset equivalent to a monster truck. Very sharp out of the package. Very easy to resharpen (unlike Owner or Trokar). My only problem with the Gammy Heavy Cover straight shank flipping hook is the gauge thickness of the hook, it tears up baits.

A new hook to me is the Mike Ike Fusion hook, Looked great, sticky sharp out of the package. Strong without being such a large gauge wire like the Gammy. However, the hook keeper is kept in position with some kind of very week shrink tubing. It slides down very quickly.

So far I'm still on the hunt and VMC and Mustad are next on the list to try.

Let me just say I fish very similar to Mike in some very similar waters. I have stated before how most rods on my deck are Heavy or Mag Heavy with a minimum of 50lb and during the pad season 65lb braid.

Mike I encourage you and anyone else to try the Owner Jungle Flipping Hook. All the issues you have listed I have yet to see happen since going to them.

• Owner Jungle Flipping Hook uses a Needle Point not a cutting point. So putting a tip on one isnt a issue.
• It uses what they call Zo-Wire and is slightly smaller diameter and a gray frictionless finish for great penetration
• As for the bait keeper it is wrapped onto the shank and has worked outstanding. Not one has ever slipped on me.
• Also the Zo-Wire is suppose to be significantly stronger than other traditional high carbon steel wires. I have not bent even one to date. I was getting the same thing you were with the Trokar opening up especially on the bigger 5/0.
• The eye is 100% closed as well to avoid knots slipping out. This is why I am like at how Zip is having this issue?

One other thing I liked a whole lot was the actual design of the hook. It has a slightly longer shank than the Trokar 130s. Well its just slightly bigger at each size and no canted hook point. I find the Jungle fits the baits I use better. One example is the Papa Pit Boss. My hook point is better located down further in the bait.
As for the keeper being a nylon I like this a lot. There is no chance of it catching the mouth opening it and or hanging on anything other than your plastics. They do stand up a little more once you put the snell knot up under it. They hold my plastics perfectly fine.

Trokars for me.  I also snell knot and have not had a single issue with the line coming undone.

Mike, 95% of my fishing is punching mats and alligator grass on the Cooper River.  I flip year round except for December thru February where the jig and crank baits usually out-produce punching.  I have tried just about every hook made for flipping and have settled on 2 hooks. When $$$ is on the line, a Mustad grip-pin flipping hook is all I use. They are sharp and strong and if they start to dull, you can touch them up easy with a file and they are sticky sharp again. On the days I'm playing on the river, I use the VMC heavy cover hooks. These hooks are incredibly sharp but are not as stout as the Mustads, which is ok when fun fishing and they are reasonably priced.

just a mention about sharpening a trokar point.  i have had the need on very few occasions to sharpen a Trokar point, but do not have an issue with doing so.  you can leave the point three sided just by following the flat sides, but i usually re-cut the bottom side to form a diamond point.  you just need a high quality mill file.  it will cut it to a nice sharp point very quickly.

in fact, i have been using the same GrassJig that i took out of the blems because the hook point was bent to begin with.  simply took the old trusty file and put like new point back on it and have been catching bass on it for over 3 months, and it is still razor sharp.
