I picked up a BPS PRO LITE reel to go with the one I already had and liked. This one was used but the from the pics it looked good and the price wasn't too bad so I pulled the trigger. It showed up in the mail and when I opened the package it was in it's original box and looked clean, worked well but when I pulled the sideplate and then the spool there was a lot of oil and I thought I saw grease. This week I decided it was time, tear it down, check it out, clean relube and see if I want to tune it later.
After the tear down I'm of the opinion whoever did the service work before had a deal with the lube company for quantity purchasing, there was blue grease everywhere and in thick layers, the AR bearing was swimming in it along with everything else. all the bearings had grease coating it.
The good news is that after cleaning it looks to be in good shape. When I have it back together I'll put on a rod and see if I'm going to really get into it later. I didn't buy it for long casts but for shorter ones.
I bought it off ebay, the next day I was looking and there was a brand new on up for auction with the buy it now 9 dollars more, go figure! lo lo lo

Isn't that the way it always goes. lo lo Just like when your cleaning up and throw something away that you have had for awhile and don't use so you throw it away and then not to long after you throw it away something comes up and you need it.  ;D Sounds like the reel is in good shape for what you want to use it for.

My guess is someone was servicing it in prep for possible salt water use as well. I know that some of the reels I service that are gonna have a possibility of them using it in salt water as well, is gonna get a good coat of grease to protect from corrosion.
My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

Link?  Couldn't find it.  I purchased a couple of the older gold colored Carbonlites a few years ago.  No problem casting a 3/16 oz. Shad Rap on them.  Since the Pro Lite is suppose to be a finesse reel, I'd like to see what one could do.  How light do you go with your first one?

I've gone down to a 1/4 with my old gold PRO LITES and they'll get a bit lower yet With the newer one in use about the same  but I want to try Ned rigging it with light baits. These are the predecessors to the CARBONLITE reels, I have a Gold CL and don't like it as much as these, the one I posted about is a copy of a DAIWA I believe and has a high bearing count, they don't come up often at auctions.

That makes sense, the only time I have to worry about salt is during the spring thaw.  lo  I got it back together and on a rod med action with 12 lb flourocarbon( came with it) and an 1/8 ounce jig, I'll try it later weather permitting.

Pro Reel

If you polish the friction points and then buff tension disks and spool shaft ends with tungsten disulphide, that reel will cast finesse baits almost as well as any high end pixy type reel.

Thats because the gold pro lite reels were made by Daiwa, and based off the Pixy with linear magnetic brakes.

My 2 gold ones do, the one you did for me and the one I did. The one I'm doing right now I didn't do anything but a clean and lube, I may do a tune later but I want to see what it'll do as is, besides, I don't know if the original owner had a super tune done, doesn't look like it but I'm not sure. My original thought was it would be for shorter range that a stock reel should be able to do. If I didn't have the number of reels I have I'd just send it out and have everything done but on a fixed income taint going to happen. lo Besides, I like going through them, helps me get through the winter. lo
I appreciate all the help I've received from Kevin, Matt and Mike and am very grateful for the ability to ask questions and receive the help. Oh I did try it out, the flourocarbon needs to be replaced, it's taken a deep set and comes off in coils, makes nice looking springs. lo I have the braid I'm going to use, just need to spool it up.
