First Shimano Spinning Reel

The Mrs got her Shimano NASCI 2500 today.  I was just reading the manual and noticed a small package in the reel box that contained 4 small fiber washers.  It says these washers can be used to change the winding shape of the reel. 

OK I give up......What the heck are they talking about?  What is winding shape and why would I want to change it?

i believe they change the way the line lays on the spool if i remember right.
If its not laying right or say its bunched up more on one side you add or take away washers so it lays flat and even on the spool. i have never seen or needed it done so i could be 100% wrong but thats what i seem to remember.

You play with the washers if the line is not going on even on the reel. In other words, if it looks like a "cone" (up or down) you need to change the washer, to a small or a bigger one than what is currently on the reel.

If you unscrew the drag knob, and then remove the spool, you will see at least one or several of those washers on the spool shaft right above the click wheel. They are spacers to position the spool in harmony with the line roller. As you retrieve line you want it to stack evenly across the width of the spool. If it's stacking more line towards the front of the spool then you need to add a washer. If it's stacking more line towards the back of the spool you will need to remove one or switch to thinner ones. Most reels will be set perfectly from the factory, these are just in case.

My Mitchell stacked the line towards the front of the spool, I removed that washer and rubbed it on sandpaper until it stacked evenly. It also came with two extras, but I didn't find them until after I'd done this.
