After the unfortunate FLW tournament accident on Lake Okeechobee you might want to go to the "Boating Safety" section here on UB and see the segment on Life Vests. There are some great tips by the UB members there!

Buy the best PFD money can buy and wear it all the time when on the water. I never take mine off once I enter my boat. I even bring mine along when riding in other's boats. I can't put a price on my life, can you put a price on your life?

When I owned a fiberglass guided missle I always wore my life jacket when operating it and connected to the Deadman Switch. It was always a good vest like the 100 mph vest from BPS.
Now that I am fishing mostly reservoirs I have an automatic/manual inflatable vest that I wear early and late in the Season all the time. This type is not considered a life vest on board unless you are wearing it. During other times of year I have my vest style hanging on the back of my front bow seat. Boats with gas outboards are not allowed so high speed problems are not possible.

I wear an auto inflate all the time. they are so comfortable. I often forget to take it off until I get in my truck after trailering the boat.

I've been doing that for a number of years as well. I started not too long after a local young man slipped on his deck, hit his head on the railing as he went in. They found him and his boat just a couple feet from shore.
