Alright I have a issue with certain baits namely soft plastics mainly that I really seem to get to using heavily and then from out of nowhere either the entire bait is discontinued, or the color, or both. The one problem with it is I the rush to find as many as I think I can somewhat reasonably purchase. Now I have way to much plastics. ::)

Here is a list of a few that I really liked for what ever reason like price or color etc but got chopped by the manufacturer.

  • Berkley Havoc Skeet's Pit Boss - These are being replaced with the same product just with Berkley Powerbait formula not a total loss
  • Berkley Havoc Skeet's Pit Boss - No longer made in Sapphire Blue color a favorite of mine
  • Berkley Havoc Skeet's Pit Boss - No longer made in Lime-Purple Pasion color another favorite of mine
  • Z-Man 7.5" Ribbon Tail WormZ in Pumpkin Seed color - discontinued product
  • Storm Arashi Rattling Square Bill - I was turned on to these Arashi by Mike. I really like the rattling version but guess what, its discontinued.  ~rant
All of the above except the Storm Arashi Rattling Square Bills I have numerous packs I stocked up on. I have others as well that I have bought thinking I don't want to run out of.  ::)

So what are your Discontinued baits and do you horde some when you know the supply is limited?

Great topic!

Say it ain't so! The regular Pit Boss is no more? I'll have to stock up before they are all gone. I always liked the price at $3 a bag. The power bait ones are pricier.

The one bait that I really stocked up on was when I was really into saltwater flats fishing. Yo-zuri made the L Minnow jerkbait that was killer on trout and redfish. I ended up buying 6 cases my favorite color. Yo-zuri has brought back the L minnow from time to time and then discontinued it again. I still have 2 cased left.

Stocking up never works out for me, I always wind up using something else, or I always miss the boat on the "clearance sale". I thought I would never find anything to replace the original Mr. Twister Poc'it Phenoms from the '80's, but I have, I'm very fickle.  The one exception is color, some of Zoom's special run colors can be "magical" on certain bodies of water, and I will buy all that I can find, many times disregarding bait style, I don't fish lizards often, but I do in one color because it's all I have.

Pit Boss Blue saphire had me crying for three weeks  :'( I still get the sniffles when I think about it  :surrender:

Another soft plastic that keeps screwing me is the Big Bite Baits. Every time I get to liking a color they DQ it. The current killer to my sole is the Watermelon Pumpkin laminate.

Hard bait wise I've not run into problems. I guess because I'm always looking for the latest and greatest anyway.

Spinnerbaits, the Excel opposite rotating blade combination was killer here in Louisiana. The bait only lasted a year and I missed the close out.

I'm down to one new pack and 1/2 of another of the Sapphire Blue. lo Not sure I will ever open the last bag I may have it mounted. ~roflmao
Still have about 8 packs of the Lime-Purple Passion color. It works great in more stained or clear water and I haven't been fishing that water much the past few years.

Its been a few years since that is what a Berkley rep said it was just a matter of phasing out the inventory and all Pit Boss would be with Power Bait.  It does seem that the color selection has diminished considerably. At one time there was almost 50 colors in the Pit Boss line up. That besides the price made it a great bait as you could get just about anything color wise.

Yep that's her, very special indeed!

I could save them, caught way to many big bass on them. I would hold out for big bass conditions though  :-*

Gary Yamamoto discontinued hard baits, my two favorite cranks were their Size 100 and 200 Chikar Crankbait. There are still a few around but once gone - GONE.

At one time it was the old Rebel PopR for me in the P70 model. They've remade them, but IMO, they're still not the same lure.

I liked that Yozuri L too, but wasn't one I used a lot. I still have several of them.

The original Yozuri Pin's Minnow was a great UL lure that I did very well with. It was a good general purpose bait in the MD tidal rivers, as I caught all kinds of fish on them, including bass. They reintroduced them as well, but the popularity of the original grew so much that the price doubled and the "new" colors were not as good IMO.

FFF, I've used those Calcutta swimbaits and IMO, the Storm baits are exactly the same. It's highly likely the same company in China makes them both. You can get the Storm at very reasonable prices.  ;)

Not one of my baits that I had some sort of passion for but some of the XCalibur lures had a heck of a following. Sadly it was after they were done.

Ever look on eBay at some of the rare colors the prices are stupid. There was also a following for the XCalibur  Rayburn Red color.

D.W. Verts

It's an Ozark thing, I know, and they really weren't discontinued, but the old Storm Wiggle Wart caught me a bucket load of fish over the years, and everyone says that the new-style Rapala bait doesn't get it done. I recently bought a dozen unbranded blanks that are supposed to be popped from a mold of the original- we'll see.

Not that it really matters. I own 144 old-style, pre-Rapala Wiggle Warts.

It's an Ozark thang.

SteveTX, much of that price thing on Ebay is with collectors, not folks who intend to fish the lures. They can get real high with prices on some things.

True for some but I know some who fully intend to fish them. No different than Mike liking the Sapphire Blue Pit Boss. Its a favorite to them and they feel it produces so they fish it. The one I know for a fact is bought to be fished is that XCalibur  Rayburn Red color.

loomisguy

Yep, the wiggle wart before Rapala screwed it up. The newer ones are actually better than the first effort Rapala made. BPS sells some of Tim Hughes custom colors that work great here in the Ozarks.
I paid a ol boy here $100 for a dozen pre Rapalas years ago and I wish I had bought all he had.
The prices are getting crazy for them.
DW , If the blanks you have are the Predators they are really good. If you can find the Luck E strike wart hog they are good too, as long as you get one that doesn't leak.

SFL BassHunter

I stocked up on the pitboss earlier this year because I don't use anything in powerbait line.

The reason Storm sold out to Rapala was the molds for the Wiggle Warts had to be replaced because they had worn out and Storm didn't want to invest in new molds.  Also, depending on the color, the original Warts were made from 3 different types of plastic, clear for the see through baits, a different type from the "chrome " baits for better paint adhesion and a third type for the regular solid colors.  There was a side bar with John Storm in an OLD issue of In'Fisherman were he went through the whole deal.  For the life of me, i can't remember the different types of plastic.
