My theory has always been if they will bite a A-Rig or spinnerbait or a spoon or all the million other crankbaits with 2 or 3 sets of treble hooks dangling off them, they cant decipher a weed from my line to save their life.

I would love to support "American made" but after SteveTX's first report on braided line I went looking. found some line on ebay, does come from China but the price was so out of hand could not resist. It was called Fishingsir, a super dyneema line #65 test cost me about $25.00 with free shipping not bad until you realize that was for "1000 meters" that's a little bit more than almost anything here costs for 150 yards. so far very limited use but happy with the results.

Walmart by me also sells Trilene braid, which I have tried and liked. Can't remember if it's cheaper or more expensive than PP though.

Should be damn near identical to the Stren braid. Same company.

Looked at buying some chinee line from evilbay,but sometimes seems hit or miss whether you get good line or something bad. Will try American-assembled stuff first.

Not sure what the green stren feels like, but the white stren feels nothing like the green trilene.
Unless they have changed it since I used it.

Tufline 4orce is usually cheaper than Power Pro. It's $14.97 for 275 yards at Dick's right now.

I wonder how much shipping is on the tuffline from Dick's?

Went outside to remove some line from the reel to make room for braid. I think I have less line on my reel than I thought ,or my distances are off. I don't think it's distance,as I shoot my air rifle where I was pulling off line and I know the range there.

As it stands I have about a 1/4" space before I hit the top of the spool. Is this enough? Or maybe it's too much? Anyone know?

Look where the bevel of the spool is at the lip. The line should be right up to the bevel. That is a true fill.

LgMouthGambler,we have different spools it seems,the only bevel there is, is where the spool goes into the sides;otherwise we are on straight,no-bevel,plane.

Rick,yes I'm still going old skool here with a couple 4600's. Someday I'll get a tatula,if stuff stops falling apart around me.

I do hope the braid casts well on the old reel.

actually braid casts better on the old reels where the level wind goes back and forth. on reels that the level wind does not go back and forth, the braid has to jump over itself and in doing so, because of the limpness of braid, really jumps off the spool and causes many back lash problems. of course you can dial your reel down to help with the issue, but loose the ability of a lure such as a jig to free spool to the bottom on its own, and you have to hand feed it line. most of us here in my parts that use braid all the time have gone back to the old school reels. they just do a better job with braid.

I don't suppose you know how much mono to leave on a 4600? Currently I have cheap omniflex 15lb test on it. Maybe I should spool it up with some trilene xt 20lb before adding the braid..

Your cheap omniflex will do just fine as backing. I wouldn't waste anymore line. Besides if you get down far enough to hit backing then you are probably not bass fishing. Or you have too much backing and not enough main line.

Thanks Rick,I'll pile it on what mono I have on there then. When I'm done getting it spooled on I'll take it out and cast and then hobble another 30 feet or so and put a piece of tape across the line to prevent a major backlash.

Got out to chinamart this morning and bought some power pro 50lb test braid. Which was what they had,if they had tuf-line I would've bought that. Paid about $13 for 160 yards.

First thing I noted was how tough this stuff was to cut,the mustad split ring pliers had trouble going through it ,requiring multiple cut attempts.

Filled up the spool too much I think. Went out and cast my 3/8 oz practice weight. I think I gained another 12 feet of casting distance by changing to the braid. The braid casts easier and further than mono.

A little disappointed in myself,I discovered the 4600 has a capacity of 160 yards of 12lb mono. I could have just attached it to the bare spool and used it all.If I had been paying attention when I was spooling up I could have stopped earlier,then I would've had enough for two spools. I guess I'm just slow-witted today. I'll blame the headache I have for messing me up.

TW, go over to Monster Tackle, and get yourself a pair of Pitbull cutters. Cuts braid like butter.

yes, you do need backing with some mono. 75 yds. of braid is plenty of line to spool on. as for how much backing you will just have to put some on and then spool on your braid and adjust from there.

forgot to add that braid frays just as any other line, and you have to visually look because you can not go by feel. when you see little fuzzies sticking up off the braid, retie it.

Since you can't get pitbull cutters make sure you pull the line taut then cut.

Yes the boomerang cutters are awesome. I have 2 of them. They are a step down vs pitbull for braid, but they cut everything.
