BIG PAPA

Yeah Caddo was pretty tough for me too yesterday. I caught 1 real good fish about 6 lbs. and 3 dinks in about 4 hrs. the big fish came on a lizard fished weightless over a grass bed and the dinks came on a fluke around trees. I cannot see any real spawning activity. water on the upper end started out about 59 degrees out on the open lake and warmed up to about 65 in the shallows. If the major spawn does not happen this week it will surprise me.

Red Ranger

Fished Caddo yesterday in same tournament as TreyS.  It was a tough day.  We threw everything we had except hand grenades.  My fishing partner was suppose to bring those, but there was a miscommunication.

Anyway, we caught 1 dink.  Ran into Mr. Game Warden right before we left to run  back to "watch" the weigh-in.  The game warden said nobody was catching fish.  That was a little consoling.

I did develop a really good jack fish pattern if anyone is interested.  But, for future reference, anybody want to share hot baits, colors or patterns for this time of year on Caddo for bass?

BIG PAPA

Ranger no more luck than I have had I may be talking out of my hat :'(
But this time of year the grass is one key, a lot of the real big fish are relateing to grass beds. As far as baits Rogues and shallow cranks in bright colors are always hot this time of year. a lizard fished weightless over the grass beds has caught lots of Caddo bass for me. Of course a chart/white spinnerbait is always a great spring bait and if you like jigs a light colored jig swam around cypress trees is as good a way to catch a giant as I know of. for the next 2-3 weeks look in very shallow water 3 feet and less for numbers and 4-6 ft on the single trees with a jig or brushog for bigger fish.  ;)

Might try going up shallow and throwing a junebug or wm/red weightless senko or chopstik around the trees, been catching some nice bass when nothing else has worked. Bass will pick up this week and when they do I would be using a jig or worm in about 3-4 ft. ~shade
  Later guys and gals.

Well I fished the same tourney as TreyS and Red Ranger.  I took second with one over.  My partner caught a real nice jack fish and I had the over and a dink.  The over came in Hog Waller on a Watermelon/Green Pumpkin Sweet Beaver, and the dink was in the northern section of Big Green Break on a waterbug sweet beaver.  Not a whole lot of action to speak of.  I did have one swirl at a buzzbait early in the morning, but it could have been a jack.  Saw quite a few jacks in the grass and all of our bass hit next to the cypress trees.  Water temp started at 55 and finished at 59 by 3:00.

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and you'll never see him again!

Gabby

Wow!  Welcome aboard Mr. Keith!!!  Pretty cool having one of the best anglers in North Louisiana on our site!  Brantley Salter & I are planning on contacting you pretty soon about a guided trip on Caddo.

Once again, welcome aboard!

No doubt about the honor we amatuers feel with PK visiting the site.  Welcome Paul.  I'd like to yank one of those monsters you regularly pull outta Caddo.   ;PHO)

BTW....this is your paint salesman, from back in your painting days (Teddy - Sherwin-Williams).  Come by one of our stores and let me pick your brain for a few hot tips from time to time!   :-*

:'( Didnt get to make it to the lake today....my fishing partner Sean called me about 10 this morning from Caddo lake today and had caught a 7.5 and a 6 with 2 slots on a lizard(black). Will be out there the rest of the week though...full moon = big bass. V&M has a new 14 inch worm I'm gonna try ~shhh

Good Luck Paul if you stick one of those monsters make sure you get a pic for us ~c~

Paul showed me these new baits from V&M, very impressive. If you are a fan of the zoom old monster you need to check this one out. Paul where can we buy them?

The only 2 places right now to get them are Bacons and Sportsmans Depot(Hwy 1) Its called a Bayou Giant. The hot new color they have out is FireBug 1/2 junebug on one side and 1/2 black ruby on other side. Looks good anyway...lol  will give it a whirl tomorrow. :-*

Mike Cork

Excellent, that actually sounds really good to me. Guess I better get out there and pick some up, and what do you know Sportsmans depot is on the way to Caddo for me ;) Any tips on how deep we should be fishing right now out there? I know a lot of folks are rushing the spawn, but I guess if the water temp gets right it could start this weekend under the full moon.

BIG PAPA

I threw it all last summer, not sure it was a V&M but a 14 inch monster that I was getting from Sportsmans depot. caught 1 5 1/2 in one of our club tourny's a while back, but never left it on long enough to really test its merits as a big bass bait. Kind of has to be though doesn't it :-[

Hey guys - really enjoying reading all your reports - I lived in Haughton in 96-97 and Caddo was my favorite. . . what great grass fishing!   One color i found that they really liked there, and i have never caught them on it anywhere else - was a jig rigged with the pumkin/green pepper craw with orange pincers.  Just wondered if anyone else likes that color there.  Sure would like to go back - loved those 3 fish fruitjar tournaments

Paul Keith

We are really close to the next wave of spawners. The bucks are moving up and usually the females arent far behind (should start within days) Caught mostly bucks today throwing a 5 inch weightless chopstik(senko) in watermelon/red and a junebug lizard in about 2-3 ft of water around heavy vegetation. Larger females didnt cooperate as well today, but will bust loose soon with the full moon. ~c~  We actually had a lot of females spawn in late Feb. this year when we had 80 degree days on the last full moon and the water got into the low 60's. Found females on their beds in Hog Wallow and Big Green at that time.

I am glad you mentioned that Paul. I also saw fish on beds at that time but did not know if they moved out without spawning due to bad weather, I never was sure.
thanks
papa ;D

I caught some nice fish on pumpkin jigs with an orange trailer this winter, especially up north when the water was a little off color.

I just KNEW it was going to be a banner day on the lake.  The temps are up, including the water temps.  It was a bit overcast, and really nice.  The moon is full, and that's the best.  I couldn't hardly sleep last night.

Then, I go out with a buddy this morning and catch two fish myself, and he catches one and a jack fish.  A couple more fish hit the bait a few times that almost seemed "defensive".  Don't know when I've been more baffled by fishing.   :-\

Mike Cork

Crustaceous , Don't get frustrated on us ;) I'm with you Caddo baffles me completely. If I every figure it out I will surely let you know. Old Railroader spends a lot of time out there not as much as Papa but a lot of time. I think he has pet fish that like to play with him.

Railroader Congratulations on the Toad WTG  ~c~ ~c~ ~c~ what did you catch her on?
