My advice would be to head west to the Texas side and swim a chrome rattletrap through any grass you can find.  You may only get a few bites...but chances are...they will be bigger fish. Try to concentrate in areas of 4 to 6 ft with the water as cold as it is.  Swim the crankbait as slow as you possibly can...remembering to just knick the grass.
Ranger Boats aren't Skeeter-ed, Nitro-ed or
                       Triton-ed!!!

Chrome/Blue rattle trap is a good choice as mmberry sugested and I also would try a natural Crawfish color now a little...was allways a good choice for me early in the year..

I'd also try a black/blue jig fished around trees in Big Cypress and Alibgator Bayou...I've done pretty good with this in the past...Looks for trees that kind of stand out from others or the bank......I done well jsut running up and down Aligator bayou...stop at a tree...pitch a jig a time or two...maybe a trap, then motor on down to the next one...Sometimes don't even lower my trolling motor...just use the drift of the boat then move on..

Fished saturday morning out of mooringsport.  Caught 1 slot fish on a texas rigged pumpkin tiki stik.  I also foul hooked a 12 lb carp with a rattle trap.  Thought I had the bass of my life until I got it to the boat. :'(  It took about 10 minutes for my heart beat to calm back down.

Caddo has been tough for me these last couple of days. Fished Sat.-Mon.(Saturday+Sunday smith marine tourn.) only boated 6 fish, all slot, nothing over. Most bites came off trees in as deep as 7ft. Warm week ahead ~sun, maybe the temp. will get up and things will get bigger and better.

Caught 12 by noon today mostly bucks on red rattletraps in 3-5 ft of water over grass. Fish were very scattered though. Caught a couple off the trees on V&M Super Hightails. Really slowed down after noon with no wind, bluebird, post front....you know the rest... ~gator

Trey and I ripped the bucks and slots pretty good today. Almost all came on zoom little critter craw worms, green pumpkin with red claws. Most of our fish came from around thick trees with grass and or hyacinths, some as shallow as 18 inches, some as deep as 4 ft. I never even checked the water temp. till I ran into Paul, then when he said he had seen some 62 degree water I hit the banks on North shores and caught fish like crazy till a little after noon. Then we caught maybe 3-4 fish after that. We fished around potters and Little green break just working the tree lines on the windy side.

Caught a small bass right off the bat third cast.About  45 minutes later my heart got a good racing, hooked the biggest bass of my life and after a brief fight i landed her. 8.1 pounds thats not real big  for some of you guys but it was so exciting fot me.I brought fish home and took some pictures and them released her into the red river to grow some more.
total fish i caught today was 6 a few under slot and a few in the slot.

Had a client catch a 11.5 lb. today on an 9 inch black lizard in 4 ft water. His biggest before that was a 7 lb. You may have heard his screams of joy around 8 am if you were on Caddo today. lo

Paul Keith

It's Here! Yes, great spring time bass fishing on Caddo Lake. The big ones are really starting to bite. Had a customer catch an 11.5 lb. bass yesterday using a large V&M Big Hawg Lizard(9 inch). His buddy had one larger (at least 12 :shocking:) a couple of hours later break off right at the boat after jumping completely out of the water a couple of times. My best patterns right now is to throw a lizard, tube, or jig around the cypress in 3-6 ft. of water and throw a watermelon/red V&M chopstik(senko) around the 1-3 ft. cypress and work it out slow. Red and chrome rattletraps are still good over the grass and along the edge of main lake sloughs especially on windy days. There are lots of fish moving onto their beds right now and lots that are still out staging, so I expect next month to be as good if not better than this one with lots of big bass caught all spring. The lake has filled back up and is safe to navigate with water temps ranging from 58-65 degrees. Go to http://bayououtdoors.com to see the V&M and Cyclone line of baits.
