Trey - that is a great story.  I was fishing Caddo with my brother once, and we were in this little opening inside the trees by Jap Island.  He told me to look, and I saw him slow rolling a spinner bait about 15 feet from the bow of the boat.  following closely behind was what we thought was an absolute hawg - at least 8 pounds.

He stopped his retrieve, and the fish hammered it.  When he said it was a "Grennel," I had no idea what he was talking about.  Anyway, he told me to grab the net because he had never landed one - but I wasn't quick enough (heck, it was in the rodbox that he was standing on).  The big boy broke off, and took his new spinner bait.

Hey, if you aren't scared of the rain, lets go throw some jigs & traps this weekend.

Call me.

wehn i catch a grennel, i normally will grab his top lip with a pair of neelde nose pliers and his bottom lip with another pair and "make a wish".  every now and then when you grab him just right, you can turn him inside out.  i hate trash fish.  i caught a goo, he was about 12 pounds on cross the other day on a 10' june bug worm and same thing happened to me.  he wrapped me around every leg of this dock and i just knew i had a replica on the end of that line waiting to be cashed in.  so i did a little retina surgery on him, bilaterally, and released him to be turtle food.  i wonder if darwin had this in mind when he came up with the principle of "survival of the fittest??"

Fished caddo today caught 3 slots spinnerbait and jig. here is a tip: lets say you get hung up under a pier you go over to get it, get it unhung do not use the butt of the rod to push yourself away like i did the rod sliped and i went for a swim  lo the fun part was trying to catch my boat was able to hang on to the rod took about 8 or 9 tries but caught the cables on the motor with the  jig pulled it back over, well that cut my day short so hope this tip helps someone out..

~roflmao Man it is so cool to know that I am not the only one!!!!! Everytime I have hit the water though I could walk back to the boat. The imagine I get of you hanging on a dock while trying to pitch to your boat (backwards ain't it should be boat to dock lo ) PRICELESS.

Thanks for sharing RailRoad and like Mike N. I am not laughing I promise

In a The Club tourney Randy shoved off a tree with his rod lost his balance and grabbed the tree . He was just hanging on a limb I was laughing so hard I could not troll back for at least a min. I thought he was going to kick my butt for a minute then he started laughing. ;D

PaPa the only thing better for us reading this would be a wasp nest worse for poor old Randy.

Needed some of Ricky's Cajun fish bait today.
fished Caddo from 1 till dark caught 6,  1 over that was very skinny, looked sick. 3 slot fish 2  dinks. Slots drive me crazy all 3 of the slots were just over the line 1/64 or less.
Went down to the Dam , an area I never fish so I would be close if the bottom dropped out.
All on a spinnerbait , Black with red strands and gold colorado blades 3-5 ft.

Since it was so wet I got to go today, was a little windy today to say the least but I did manage to catch 4 and lose one on a jig. Nothing big just 3 slots and an under. may have had more bites but it was very hard to feel the bite. /All the fish were caught between 1 and 2 -0:clock they just turned on and off like a switch. just pitching to shallow trees behind Whately island.

I guess I am going to go tomorrow, thought about this afternoon but it's not looking good :( I haven't been out there since the last TCTC so I really have no clue.

Just to help get a game plan going, is the lake high like the rest around here? and how far is the mud from the river reaching out into the lake? I have heard the grass is really bad this year; does it stretch around the Louisiana Texas state line to the east side of big green break and Jap island? Just some basic lake condition info would be a giant help. Anyone have recent temp readings from around the lake?

First there is no way there is much mud, In all my fishing I have never seen so much moss. The only place I could find to fish north was in the boat rows mostly :- Pretty much from Whatley up is VERY grassed up, All around Tuckers is bad. Have not looked at green break but it was mossed up early this year should be pretty bad in there.
Most of Jeems is very grassy anywhere close to the bank The back third is almost solid moss.  There are places you can fish but a spinnerbait is hard to throw most of the lake up north.
Water temp. was 58+ Tuesday.
Papa :'(

Thanks Papa, Have you tried fishing up in the river? I would imagine with the rains that it is high and swift propably a little muddy that was as well.

Thanks Papa, If I get to go tomorrow it will probably be in the late morning and I think I will head that way first as well, maybe I will see you up there  ~c~ Then if I don't find anything I guess I will stay close to the launch and pitch a jig and hope for one good bite.  lo

I don't know how much help Brain and Terry will be they want to take the tittle away from us  lo and if we don't catch some fish it will be anyones ball game  ;)

well when i went thursday it was muddy and running temp was 60 deg. not sure how far it goes into the big lake? the guy we bought our car from at red river don kiser who fished tourny's years ago told me of a grass bed, so thats the only thing we have going at the time. and the only reason he told me was he said he doesnt fish anymore. so like mike said all you need is one good bite to win.. aned far as the title goes we are too far behind to catch up so maybe next year.. if i dont work too late im hoping to get out tomorrow myself.. later

Mike Cork

Let's seen.... Laurie and I bomb and you win with a big sack (hmmm, sound familar) the tides could change lo It's all in great fun and side bar competition. That's why I love the TCTC and thoroughly enjoy fishing with everyone in it.

Don't think I am going to make it tomorrow after all. Type at you later and looking forward to some great reports.

when to caddo today got to shady acers around 0710 went up to try some trees in front of brumley nothing  :'(  headed back to the texas side around sandy caught an over and a dink on a spinnerbait. tried tar island missed one on a worm, tried hogwollow nothing there, tried clinton lake nothing there, so headed back to the launch ran into papa and trey visited for a minute best part of the day to visit with friends, left to go to the launch thought i would try the trees across from the launch caught another over 3.9 on my scale. oh papa fished the trees at the launch to the right caught a under keeper 13in. lol we talked about that earlier so in all had 2 over one under one dink all on spinnerbait..

BIG PAPA

I ended up with a trail boat today , two of the boys that work for us wanted to go so Trey let them use his boat. I did not want to make a run, I knew the boys wanted to fish not runaround so I did not get up to Alligator bayou as I had planned, just fished around Potters and a little up in Jeems. We caught 1 on buzzbait (slot) two on spinnerbait both slots, 3 on a jig, 2 slots and a small over (18 1/2) another day ruined by slot fish. I know when you are just out fishing it should not matter about slots and it is fun to catch a 2 lb. fish but it still burns my A%$^&*#$. ;D
Stayed away from Whatley, did not want to yoke Mikes jig fish. ~an~

Papa, thanks for the report. Don't worry about those whately fish. We should fish it together that way we could at least enjoy each others converation ;)

Still catching buzz bait fish that is good 8) I like that they will hit a jig, beings the water is so clear would you mind giving up a hint to what color you were using :-\ Hey if they will hit a buzz bait, did you try something slower on top like a spook?
