Bass fishing has been good over the past week. The water temps are in the low to mid 50's and the water is still low but coming up some with the recent rains. I have been using a couple of different lures lately, starting with a V&M Pork Shad in colors of watermelon or junebug. I Texas rig this bait with a 4.0 hook and no weight. Fishing over the grass and through the pad stems have worked well. Another lure I have been using is a 1/2 oz. Cyclone Jig in colors of back/blue or mardi gras. 5 inch tubes in colors of black/blue or black/red are working well also. Stick with the cypress trees in 2-4 ft. of water fishing slow. I like to use a V&M Mud Bug as a trailer. The crappie are fair using white or green 1/16 oz. jigs fished 3-4 ft. deep using a bobber. Go to http://bayououtdoors.com to see the V&M line of baits.  ~shade

Trey and I went to Caddo today , we started out thinking about going to the river but decided we would rather catch some fish on Caddo then look for dinks on the river ::)
We first went up in Bonhams arm where we caught 16 week before last. We started off throwing plastic but they wanted Chrome traps. We caught about 10 in there, all between 13 and 16 inches. We then moved to a little depression area out from Potters and caught 4 or 5 more in there on traps, water was about 5 ft in that area. We then decided to check out a few places we have caught big fish this time of the year but the water is not really up enough for the little ridges that they like to hold on just before they spawn So we went up in Alligator  and just wore out the small Bass on small tubes fished down the bank. After about 2 hours and about 10 or so little fish we went back to Jeems and finished up around marker 70 fishing a shallow crankbait around the stems and caught 5 more with the big fish of the day about 5 1/4, Trey caught her right off an old brush top I put out 4-5 years ago by the # 70 boat row marker. What a great day ~sun
As usual here lately slot fish and dinks seemed to rule the day but as long as the slot has been in effect on Caddo that is to be expected.

Papa...

The water has come up some 8 inches in the past couple of weeks...were you able to run the boat runs pretty well?  Has the rainfall mudied up the water?  Is there some current in Alligator?  Thanks...

We ran several of the boat rows including the c boat row in front of potters with no problems and saw many other boats as well. The water color is fine, we saw some off colored water but most was clear, up in Alligator it was just right.
We fished the south end of Alligator up by Britts gap and there was no current.

Lake of the Pines is still 5 ft. low so we won't get any current until they fill up or unless we get a very heavy long rain with lots of run off that will be short lived though. But at least the water is coming up some. Every little bit helps. ~tumble

Thanks Papa...Paul...plan on hitting Caddo either Wednesday or Thursday of this week and needed to know if I was going to have to idle through the boat rows or not. I'll be in a Red and White Ranger if anyone can make it out during the week.  Surprised that Caddo is so clear...seeing it's come up about 8in in the past week and a half. Did not think there would be any current but perhaps there will be soon.

Went this morning and caught 7.  First i hit frog island area and caught 3 one just barely over the slot and the other 2 were slots.  All caught on a terminator spinnerbait.  After that went to bohnams arm and caught 4.  one weighed about 5 lbs and the others were slot.  Used a jig, black and blue and caught 2 of them and the other 2, including the 5 lb'er, on the spinnerbait.  the water was definately up a little.

Where is the alligator area that ya'll are talking about?

Hey guys, went Saturday, Sunday, and today on Caddo. Sat. was tough+wet. Caught about 6 slot. Sunday was better, but seemed to have a little bit more subtle bite probably due to the high pressure. My partner and I caught a lot of good 15-17in. slot and each had one over 5lbs. Fished the later part of the day today targeting deeper grass beds with a crankbait. Had 2 over (5lb.+6lb) and 5 slot. Fish seemed a little more aggressive in the early afternoon. Many fish had very large shad\bream in their throats. Stayed mainly towards the west side, water temp was 55 degrees.

Thanks Nick.
Man when you start seeing them key on big baitfish it is pretty sure they are in prespawn. My favorite time of the year because sometimes you can find them bunched up :-*

Hi Papa and others that fish Caddo....I kinda know the area around Tuckers and on up the river and bayou's, but have never really fished Jeems that much...

How far up Jeems do folks usually fish?
Can you run the boat row from the state park back toward the Morinsport bridge and tressel?

Just asking as myself and friend will fish the BPS big bass tourney in a few weeks....

I'll be out there this weekend checking things out..

Thanks,
Scottie

I misread your question, yes the boat row back to the tressel is good to run.
When is the tourney? I do not know if I will fish or not but I will let you know something after our tourney this weekend. I will be on Caddo for the rest of the month and maybe I can find some fish. Remind me before the tourney and I will let you know if I am on anything. If the water temp. gets close to 60 keep your boat in the channel and flog a big crankbait or trap around the stickups all up and down the channel, or maybe a jig. If you are looking for one big bite in Jeems this is a good pattern.

Hey guys, went out there last night just to take a look around :shocking:, saw several big females hangin out in about 2.5-3ft. of water. Looks like a lot of fish are definately staging right now. Hopefully a lot of the big mamas will go ahead and do their thing this next full moon. February is always a great month for big fish. See you guys Sunday.

Thanks for the info Nick...we're going in the morning and try to find some of those hogs and hopefully catch one in the BPS big bass toruny in a few weeks...  :)

Kinda like you, I think they will likely be nearn spawn in the next few weeks, especially with the full moon next weekend..

Front may have shut them down but we'll see...

Good luck in your tourny...

Nick do you mean late evening or actually at night?
Normal spawn the first real big wave should be the full moon in March if the water temp. is right. Now of course there has been little normal about this year.

OK...Fished Caddo today from daylight till early afternoon....Condidtions were tough...and cold....We went up Jeems  and did finally catch a few fish...

Started in front of the old Kool Point with no bites....went on uo to Bonhams arm and still no hits but did find some areas that looked pretty good..

Went on up to Frog Island and finally got on a few fish....The pard I was with had about a 5 plus pounder break off at the boat and then broke off on 2 other hits...He was trying Vanish line and having problems with it..May have been old line..don't know...

I caught a 14.5 incher on chartruce/white spinner....after a while working the area we went on up Jeems to near where the markers end and fished back toward the lake on left side of channel....I missed a couple of hits on blue tube and finally stuck one a little over 13....My pard also caught another about 14.5...

Although I've fished Caddo most of my life this was actually the first time I've been that far up Jeems...so it was kind of a learning experience for me....looked good up there though..

All the bites my pard had were on black/blue jig flipping around the trees....My fish and bites come on the spinner and on blue bruiser Lake Fork crawtube.....I also fished a camo jig and some rattletraps but no hits..

Most all the fish were holding in 5.5 to 6.5 feet of water so that is what we tried to stay around....Water was muddied up in a few places but only a little stained in others...Not sure the temp but sure was cold out of the water.... :shocking:

Off Monday so may work the area more...getting ready for the BPS big bass tourny...

What size line was he using?
I had a day recently on Cypress with 20 lb. Vanish where I broke off 3 fish. We caught several in the same spot and all were around 2- lbs. so I have no reason to believe the ones I broke off were big. I was breaking off on short hooksets.

And yet another satisfied Vanish customer!   ~xyz

Do a search of two around the site, you will find one or 2 people that have liked Vanish everyone else offers nothing but warnings.

I'd have to check on the weight line he was using....It was supposibly new line....He did say the one's that broke on hook set didn't seem to be really that big of fish...

He did see one take the bait and said it probably wasn't much over a pound or so....broke off on hook set..

He would have had a pretty good catch with a different line...

He want be using it any more.. ;D

Hey Guys, fished Caddo today from 11a.m.-4:30p.m. Had a great day. Caught 9 fish total, had 5 over the slot. Biggeset fish weighed 7-14. Probably had a good 30lb. sack. The northwest wind really helped, it seemed to move a few of the bigger fish on the trees, staging in 2.5-3.5ft. Now if I can just catch a few like that on the RED tomorrow  :-*. Yea papa I go out there at night w\ a spot light to a few areas just to kinda see what the fish are doing. I usually can see a lot of interesting things.
