Well, my first tournament is over.  My partner and I skunked.  I had one bump on a spinner bait and my partner didn't even get that much.  There were 9 boats in my touney.  6 boats came back with no fish.  Here were the number of fish and total stringer weight of the winners:
3rd: 1 fish @ 1.0lbs
2nd: 1 fish @ 1.3lbs
1st: 5 fish @ 31.3lbs

Yes, you read that right, 31.3.  The largest fish on the winning team's stringer was 10.8.  Have any of you ever seen such a large margin of victory?

Anyway, I had a great time and didn't feel that bad since I did just as good as 66% of the field.

I don't have the details of where the winning team fished or what they used.  I did hear that they all came from the LA side.  I will post that info if/when I find out.

Fished Caddo on Sunday with the Twin Cities Team Club.  Quite a few slot fish were caught but not many weigh fish.  Most fish were taken on rogues, jigs, and plastic.

It was a tough day.

i talked  to a guy who came in to work out yesterday and he told me that he was crappie fishing on caddo, right out in front of caddo lake grocery this past weekend. he said that around 9am a guy came blowing into the dock in front of caddo grocery hollering and screaming.  he was fishing all by himself.  he had a 12.8 pounder.  he left after getting him (her) weighed and about 2 hours later, the same guy can blowing in there again and had a 9.9 pounder.  man--what a great day for that guy.  thought yall would want to know that.  i have no idea of where he was fishing, but he was by himself and caught two trophies in two hours.

drop it deep and yank it hard.  .  .

Fished Caddo Saturday trying to catch a hawg, cause I know where all the crappie fisherman are catching them. Anyway no luck I need to switch to a crappie jig.....

Only managed a couple slot fish and several jacks, yet still throwing that spinnerbait.....

Went to Caddo Sat. a.m. and managed to catch one under on the Texas side and one that was 19.5" long, about 4, 4.5 pounds on a white spinnerbait on the LA side.  But not much else.  I hear they are catching  a few white perch shallow.  Does anyone know where and on what,...I tried a black and chart. tupe jig w/a gold spinner and only caught that one small bass.

Good luck fishin!

Trey put a serious hurting on me today at Caddo, His best 5 weighed right at 20 lbs. where as my best 4 (thats all I caught ) weighed about 5 lbs. all shallow on numerous plastics. saw a guy catch a 9.4lb. took it to Caddo grocery and registered it and then brought it back and put her on the same tree.

Hey Papa,

I was fishing the point by Jap Island when I heard some guys fishing in the trees catch something that sounded pretty big.  I looked in there and saw them drop the net and pull out a pretty big fish.

They were in a Red Skeeter, and making a lot of noise as they were pretty excited.  They left real quick (to go weigh it, I imagine) then returned within an hour.  George Perez said that the rumor was that they weighed it at 8.6!  I saw it all go down!

Two big fish in one day, or maybe the same instance?

BTW, we caught 4 or 5 dinks on the day.  Fished Jap Island, Potter's Point, and Jap Island again.  We were out at about 10 til 3.  We found a BIG gar hotspot around the trees across from PP.

Gabby

BIG PAPA

We weren't but maybe 500 yards from you!
The guy told us that Caddo groc. had weighed in 5 fish over 8 lbs. including his 9.4 all before 1:00

Hello, I am new to this forum and have enjoyed reading the posts. I caught this one on March 19 on a Rebel Pop-R. It was right across from Pine Needle Lodge on the Texas side in the evening. It's not as big as some of the ones below, but it still makes for a good day. Thanks, Ron

Heeler, that's is one nice fish. I bet it was awesome seeing that big one slam that Pop-R.

Nice fish Heeler! Always fun to get a good one on a top water.
And welcome to the site!

Heeler

Thanks you guys. It was fun getting that one on a top water! I love that big ker-ploosh! But it seems like top waters are always good in the evenings there no matter what time of year.

I plan on being a regular here now. Thanks for the welcome.

Gabby

Heeler,

You will like it here.  Bunch of nice people.  I have been here for a few months myself.

Gabby

Marty

Hey Heeler....glad to hear you caught that beauty on my all-time favorite topwater bait, the Pop-R.  I wish I had a $ for every fish I've caught on that jewel!  It is almost 100% of the time that I start my fishing day with that bait.  OK, maybe only 98%, sometimes it's a Rogue or a buzzbait, but by far most of the time it's a Pop-R.  Them big'uns just eat that thing up!  Good fishing.

Marty   :)

Heeler

Marty, I feel the same way. Almost 100% of the time I start and end my day with a Pop-R. I love that bait. It is so versatile also. I have caught everything from Bass in Caddo to Smallmouth in Canada. My dad even caught a 24lb. Northern Pike in Canada on one!

In '98 I went & visited my buddy who lives in Panama for 2 weeks.  We fished Gatun Lake, which the Panama Canal goes through, almost every day I was there, catching in the range of 65 to 100 Peacock bass a day EACH!  I caught them on pretty much every bait I threw, including live shad, but by far the most fun I had was catching them on the Pop-R's & other top water baits.  I was told by somebody before I went that the Pop-R wasn't really too good for them, but man...was that ever not true!  They slammed 'em, and I mean hard!  They are real aggressive fish, much more than largemouths and it takes alot to scare them off.  They peeled the paint off some Devil's Horses and other baits, just plain out demolished my traps, and mangled the Pop-R's.  We normally only fished about 5 hours each day because the sun just got too hot around noon or so, but I guaruntee it was a full day of fishing!  Wore me out!  Anyhow, the Pop-R was responsible for quite a few of those peacocks.  Last thing,  the peacocks are much tastier to eat than black bass, too!  Hopefully I'll get back down there sometime, but I think my buddy is back in the states for now.   :(

The pop-r is about my favorite top-water bait also. I fished Caddo this morning without luck. I had a few bumps with a lizard beside cypress trees in 2-3 feet of water. The only fish that actually bit was right next to the boat and when I tried to set the hook I broke my line. There were boats everywhere and the wind got to blowing too hard to fish the leeward side of the breaks. I wish I'd went to Grand Bayou instead.

docwaldo

well, i went to caddo this morning and ran the crap out of my boat.  went from tuckers to jeems and then to the playground and then up in the river.  caught a small mess of fish.  caught 3 overs, 6 ins and 2 unders.  most came on top water--pop-r's, scum frogs, and buzzers.  adn i caught them all day on top water.  did catch both unders and one over on plastics.  watermelon red with a spiked tail.

never caught more than one fish in any certain area--hence all the running.  but had a good time and really got to see what my boat would do in rough water.  it handled it like a champ.  only smashed one wave, and it was on my buddy's side, so no big deal.

i was amazed at the lack of lily pads.  i really had to  hunt to find a significant amount of pads that also did not have coon-tail moss so thick you could not maneuver thru it.  and ironically enough, the best looking pad beds i found were 100 yards from where i parked the truck.  right in front of tuckers.  it was just barely safe lite when we left and i did not notice how good they looked when we were blasting off.  wish i wouild have just stayed there til 900.  hindsite is always 20/20.

we were fishing somewhere around big green break and i saw a fish explode, AND I MEAN LIKE A TON OF NAILS, on the surface.  i had my handy dandy scum frog in my hand and almost fell out of the boat trying to turn it around to give him a look at it.  after chasing around these fish for almost ten minutes, i realized that they were carp.  HUGE CARP.  i bet some of them were over 20 pounds.  and they were doing the monkey dance, you know--bumping uglies.  and sometimes there would be 5 or 6 of them in a big wad just floundering at the surface.  and they never paid us any attention.  and they were everywhere.  wish i would have had my bow-fishing bow.  that would have been sweet.  this was definitely a new experience for me.  my heart was beating out of my chest until irealized they were trash fish.  but i would have loved to hook into one of the
big-uns!!

hope the club tourney went well.  another week t work--YUCK!!  i'll give it hell again next weekend.

Dead Sea Angler

Thank you for the tip, Papa.  Ill let you know how it went

Danny

I went to a tounament on Caddo saturday. It was tough all day. We spent most of the day on the south end hitting the pockets and islands. They werent biting very good down there, we caught some slots, a few unders, and a few short fish. All on brush hogs, the color didnt seem matter. After that we went to Tuckers, never been in that area, but it sure looks good. We fished the big islands in front of their with no bites.  I think they had already shut down for the day. We finshed out the day in Jeems with no success, its eat up with grass and gar already. Winning stringer was 19.35 with three fish, one of them was a hawg 9.35. Second place was 15.90. They didnt say what they were doing or where. Can somebody please tell me how to get to Tuckers on the road.
Thanks,
 Danny

Gabby

To get to Tucker's, I know you have to go I-20 to Texas.  I believe you get off at Waskom, take a left to get on Highway 80, then a right at a police station (less than 2 miles down 80).

I believe this will be Highway 8 (someone confirm?).  Take this for about 10 miles or so.  When you reach an intersection with a gas station on your left - you are almost there.  The road comes to a dead end, but you will see the Tucker's sign.

Very steep ramp, especially if the water is down!
