Anyone been fishing Caddo lately? I have a scramble tournament this sunday and I am planning on fishing Caddo. I have not had time to prefish and I could use a little info on what the fish are doing. I know I will be flipping a jig, that is about all I do. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Todd, I haven't been myself in a couple weeks but I hear the bite is picking up and the fish are shallow. This years water temps are rather warm at times still. I have been told spinnerbaits and jigs very shallow, there has been talk of flukes aslo..... I know folks have been out there and surely will post a tip or two by your tournament Good Luck

Thanks Mike. I appreciate the info. If the fish are shallow and the jig bite is on, that will be right up my ally!!

Two Saturdays ago, I fished with two friends of mine (Clint and Jay), and we caught around thirty bass the biggest was just over 5#'s and the next was 4.5#'s.  We threw back quite a few slot fish, but we did keep 9 overs.  All our fish were caught in 6-2 ft of water.  The water temp was in the low 60's and the clarity on the Texas side was gin clear.  We caught fish on white and chartruce spinnerbaits, red shad and also watermelon colored finese worms fished on wobble heads, chrome and blue rat-l-traps, baby bass flukes, chrome and black pop-r, shad colored crankbaits, and one hit on a jig (black and blue).  I tried fishing jigs and soft plastics slow, but Clint and Jay were catching fish right beside me, and I couldn't get a bite with a slow pattern.  We cught fish all day, from sun-up until about 3 or 4 PM.  Anytime we went 10-15 casts without a strike, we would change something.  The pattern was constantly changing (other than the speed of the presentation) and we did our best to keep up with it.  We found some areas that had some grass, and that seemed to be the ticket.  I hope this helps.

Oh yeah, don't take my jig fishing seriously; the fish certainly don't!  I am not the best at fishing a jig, so don't go on my word and leave it out of your search pattern.

I would like to congratulate JR Burt on a beautiful 11.5lb bass caught in our January Blanchard Bass Club tournament, she was a beauty.  He has donated the fish to Bass Pro Shops aquarium for all to see and will receive a replica to commemorate the Fish.  She  was caught at 7am and survived in his livewell unscathed, a testiment to his Blazer wells and cold water.

Pretty unbelievable he came in second with 16lb total weight to Sam Huckabee who had a stringer of almost 19lbs with 4 overs and one under all healthy fish.

congratulations to both

  Great Job !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW!!!  Congratulations, JR!  That must have been an awesome feeling.  Hope I get one of those at least once in my life!

Tell us about it.  What, where, when, and how?

Nice job. It would have been nice if that had been a boat show tourny instead of a club, that fish would have been worth a whole lot more money. But I am like Gabby, I would love to just hook into one that big just once in my life.

Thanks for the pats on the back.  I have to say that catching a fish like that was just dumb luck. The fish was in two feet of water and hit a rouge. Sam however was on some really good fish. he had caught 17 fish by 9:00 am and nine of them overs.

I checked on the fish at Bass Pro this morning and she was doing fine. They tell me that she will be in a separate tank for 10 to 14 days and then will be transfered to the showroom.

When I get the film back I will post a picture.

Well, I got the picture back, scanned it, and tried to upload it and i get an error message that  says that my file is too large. Any ideas?

save the scanned file as a .JPG and it should shrink enough to upload, if not contact Laurie and I am sure you could e-mail it to her and she could post it.

send it to me, I would like to see it.

I saved it as a jpeg, reduced the size, and it still says that it is too large. I e-mailed to you Steve, and to you too Papa.

Marty

J.R.!!!!!!!!!  You caught that baby on a Rogue?????? :o  Man, I don't know if my heart could take that kind of stress!!!  I sweat enough with 3 & 4 pounders on Rogues, cause you know them hooks are prone to tearing out at any minute!  I would say that had to be some fine fish handling on your part to get that big momma in the boat on those trebles.  It's tough enough on a single jig or worm hook, much less the much smaller treble hooks on a Rogue.  Even if you  replaced them with better hooks, it's still a tricky thing to work a big fish to the boat, knowing you have to hurry up & get it in, but at the same time thinking about what could happen if you horse it too much.  Congratulations on the hawg! ;)

Marty

Gabby

Marty,

Ask him to tell you about the one after that.  He said it ripped two trebles off the rogue!

Marty

J.R., can I have your autograph?   ;D

Marty, I have caught a couple of big fish on a rouge. You are right you cannot horse them in. When I saw how big the fish was, and saw that only the back hook was in the bottom lip of the fish, I pushed  the release button on the reel and let the fish run. I turned the trolling motor on high and followed her  for about 30 seconds, by then she was getting tired, and it was easy to bring her along side the boat. My partner did a great job with the net.

I didn't think of checking my lures condition after the catch, and about ten or twelve cast later I had another big fish hit and stay on for about ten seconds, and then come off, never got to see it.  When I brought the rouge back to the boat it was missing the back and middle treble hooks and the front bill was broken off. Oh well, can't catch them all.

But the real fisherman of the day was Sam Huckabee, he caught four and five pounders all day long, and whipped up on all of us.

Hey JR, talked to an old business associate today - Rick Hutchinson wanted me to tell you howdy.  Sent him a picture of your fish, and he was very impressed!

Gabby, If you talk to Rick before I do tell him I said Hi! If you get a chance to go fishing with him, jump on it! That man knows Caddo Lake. He has taken my money plenty of times out there, not to mention serveral other lakes.

Hey, I read you post about the big fish in the tank at the Pro Shops. Saw it today and you were right.

Gabby

Yeah, that fish looks pretty bad.  I hope it makes it.  I wonder if it can be helped?

I wouldn't mind fishing with you either!  Ask Steve about how good I took care of his truck when we fished Grand Bayou!
