Ok guys, I got your answer to the tide question, well sort of. If the winds are cooperating the tide will run about 2hrs later than what's on the tide chart for Calcasieu Pass. Now if there is a strong south wind it will keep the tide from moving out of the river so throw the tide chart away. By the same token if there is a strong North wind the tide will run out for longer periods. The best thing to do is call the Salt Water Barrier and ask for the operator. He can tell you what the tide is doing or should be doing. The number is 337-433-5013. Store it in your cell phone, you can call them while you are on the river and they will tell you what is going on.

Hey Rattle....those giving out tide information aren't related to weathermen are they????  ;D

You know Mike taht's a good point. If they are related forget it you know it won't be accurate.

From what I remember when fishing in south Louisiana and all the posts on tides....they are affected by the moon, wind, rain; which are all related to the weather.  They could be right....they could be wrong....they still get paid.

Laurie, we will be fishing above the salt water dam which is approxiately 35 miles from the gulf.  If you don't get sea sick in a pool you won't get sick on the River.

Mike Cork

Unfortunately my boat control is what makes people sea sick, I think she is getting used to it  ;D

You probably won't really even notice when it starts to move, it's kind of a subtle thing on the surface.

Mike Cork

So whats the trick to knowing it has changed, When I fished tidal waters I only new it change when you could see the current on the surface.

Most of the time there is not a lot of tidal movement on the Calcasieu since the barrier was built.  If there is a strong incoming tide the barrier is kept closed so the water does not rise much resulting in a small out going tide. If the water is high above the barrier when the tide turns then they keep the barrier open and it will run pretty good.  There is almost always a river current.  But that does not mean the cuts are running.

Mike Cork

This barrier? I take it that it is a tide control? Once again man screwing with mother nature, that usually doesn't turn out to good.

So the best chance for good water movement is on the out going tide (note to self). Typically the bite is better when the water is moving, is that true in south La. also

Yes the bite is typically better when the tide is moving out but it's going to also depend on how strong it's pulling and for how long. Yet somemore to confuse you with. I can tell when the tide starts running by( and I know you are going to think I'm crazy) the bubbles that start appearing all over. What happens is when it starts running it starts to draw the water out causing the bottom to become unsettled therefor causing bubbles to rise to the surface.

Mike Cork

Nope not crazy at all that makes sense. Is the tide change always strongest on the way out because of the barrier control

The Engineers have channeled the lower river so much that salt water was going way up river and killing all the cypress plus messing up bass fishing.  So a water control barrier was built to keep the salt water out.  They just close it and block the incoming tide from going any further upriver. The barrier is built on the north west edge of Lake Charles.

Jared LeBlue

Yes it is stronger on outgoing uless of course you have a strong South Wind.

I hate to jump ahead and start talking about next year but with everything going as good as it is now with the first event, I think in years to come this thing is going to grow and be down right awesome.
