The boat sat for about 4 months, I sold it, and the buyer says it won't go into reverse. Forward gear works fine, but when you move the arm back to shift into reverse, it clicks as if it's trying, but doesn't every shift into gear.

I'm meeting him Monday to look at it. What should I look for?

Thank you in advance!

Hello and welcome to Ultimate Bass and sorry to hear about the motor trouble on the boat you sold. I don't own a boat so casn't help you much but some of the other members will see this and give you some help.

That's a tough one as it could be as simple as the linkage has failed somewhere between throttle and the motor or as major as the lower unit gears failing.

If there was no damage I'd think it was just a failing linkage issue after sitting up.

Did anyone service the lower unit or replace the water pump just prior to it sitting for 4 months?? Just thinking maybe the shift rod may not have been re-installed properly.

Guys, thanks for the replies.

No, I've always done my own service. Changing lower unit oil, water pumps, etc...

Question - what's the name of the part that the two screws run through on the lower unit, holding the prop/reverse gear assembly into the lower unit? I know there's a gear oil seal on it. Well, it's cracked. I'm thinking maybe the lower unit oil was leaking through that crack, unbeknownst to me.

If I can figure out what that part's called, I'll order one and get it fixed.

Thanks,

Aaron

Can you take some pictures of it and post them here?

Google the Make & model number for a parts list and under the serial number, that will give you the part name and the correct part number for that motor.
