Know when you're close to your reels backing

I change line a lot, because of this I have learned to not waste line by making sure I have just enough on a reel. I like to have enough for a very long cast plus several extra feet for changing out baits and retying knots. Anything more than this is supplemented with backing line. I fill the spool short of what I will need for main line with a cheap line and then tie my main line to it.

My backing line will be the cheapest line I can find that is bright red or green. This way at the end of a long cast, if I can see the color coming through, I know I only have a couple more reties and it will be time to change my line

Mike I also use that cheep bright line for my backing also. It lest us old folks with bad eyes know right away that's it's time to change our lines.

Another good thing to add would be to wrap the backing in some bright colored painters tape. I know there are some bright greens and blues for painters tape.

I don't give this much thought, but good to know for how many reels can be re-spooled. I never have any wasted line, as I always have uses for it. I've only been using 2 line brands & types recently, Sufix 832 & Yozuri Hybrid, but have both in various tests.

I make my fly rod leaders & tippets with the Yozuri, and any short sections of braid I have on a spool, too short to re-spool a reel, I use it for making articulated streamer flies, as it makes a very good & strong connecting material. It can also be used for tying the skirts on jigs. 

Of course I already have a life time supply of short spools of line.

Great tips Mike. I only have a couple rods I can get away with them though. Lake Erie and highland reservoirs don't fish shallow often.

I too use quite a bit of backing. Use up a lot of line, with a limited amount of rods, and changing lures or baits often to find the right one I tend to go through braid quicker than most. For example when folks mention that at the end of a fishing season they spool their line on another reel to swap the top with the bottom of the line for fresh braid. I have no idea what that is...never had line last me an entire season, also down here our fishing season runs into the next. So I guess I've never had line last me an entire year.
